From the review - "many of the jokes were parochial and relied to a certain extent on an inate knowledge of English small town mentalities."
Good. Occasionally British movies compromise some of their worth by simplifying the dialogue in order to make it more accessible to non-UK, mainly American audiences (I'm looking at you Beach). "Cornetto" will never be a funny line in America but in Blighty it gets a laugh every time. British humour is top notch, some of the best in the world, so it's good to see more and more brit flicks remaining quintessentially British. Hopefully the more it's done, the quicker international audiences will 'get it'. |

Hear, hear!
Although I'm Aussie, I still appreciate good British humour. I'm sick of everything being so Americanised. Actually, we have Cornetto's here too. So, we were able to appreciate the joke. Feel the love. dolfyn. |

QUOTE (dolfyn @ Nov 8 2006, 06:57 PM) Actually, we have Cornetto's here too. We do!? I haven't seen any! I must extend my search. I miss all the luxury confectionary and snacks from home. Although I did actually manage to paraphrase a Spaced quote as I stepped through the door of a shop that imported sweets and food from Britain: Rebus: [in dawning realization] Oh my god... Rebus's Wife: What? Rebus's Wife's Friend: What? Rebus: They've got some fucking Jaffa Cakes in this shop.. |

Just look in the ice-cream fridges in petrol stations, & you'll find your beloved Cornetto's. I loved the paraphrase, too. We used to have Jaffa Cakes for sale in all supermarkets, but they're quite hard to find now. Feel the love. dolfyn. |

I stopped reading at the mention of spoilers but it sounds very encouraging.

QUOTE (dolfyn @ Nov 14 2006, 01:32 PM) Don't worry. It doesn't really give much in the way of spoilers. But it's up to you if you want to read it, of course! Feel the love. dolfyn. I like to know as little as possible by way of story before i watch anything. I was given series 5 of '24' the other day and immediatley regretted starting to read the back. It may be different for something like 'Hot Fuzz' but the principle is the same... It's probably just me. This post has been edited by Lazlo Woodbine: Nov 14 2006, 12:43 PM |
