TV show title sequences. What happened to them?
There was a time when it seemed some effort were put into classic TV show's title sequences. A blend of great visuals, fantastic music and a bit of plot background. Now they mainly consist of a theme and clips of previous/future episodes. Sometimes the makers don't even bother (Lost, Heroes, 24). There are still a few where some effort has been made - Dexter for instance. But overall they are not really as good as the classics. So presented here are, in my humble opinion, some of the great old school titles. You can view them by clicking the name in the poll. Get voting. But above all, enjoy the clips. NOTE: I realise the likes of The Avengers and Doctor Who had variations of their title sequences, so I have picked, I hope, the best examples. |

I've voted for Doctor Who but more for the original version that, like the show itself back then, was so extraordinary and revolutionary.
I do like The Avengers and The Prisoner's title sequences, I think part of that goes down to how much I love these two shows, but they both do a good job at representing the shows. I also would like to mention a certain flying sausage. |

Ah, lone vote for The Prisoner so far... that's me.
A few Americanski contributions to consider for "Other," meanwhile... Mission: Impossible - always slightly different, always Schifrin-tastic. (This is a montage of several openings from season 1) Get Smart - endlessly amusing because it's played totally straight. Mannix - mega groovy split-screen action! Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century - serialized 70's perfection. Biddy-biddy-beep. Police Squad! - possibly the best running gag in television history. Too bad it ran exactly six times. I know it's not really 'classic' but Garth Marenghi's Darkplace has an incredible sequence.
Every television program ever made should have an ambulance explosing in the titles only for it to never appear in the actual program. |

Well it uses the "lazy" formula of classic title sequences - theme tune and clips of show. With a bit of Twilight Zone thrown in at the beginning. Along with Police Squad it's a good parody of the title sequence. As for the exploding ambulance - explosions seemed to be a regular inclusion in many a title sequence. Starsky & Hutch lured me with their explosion when I was a kid. Damn those pyrotechnics. |

I do really like the Chuck title sequence. A rarity in this day and age.
