I've done the research for you Sostie and no, atomic research actually wouldn't make a lizard mutate into a giant fire-breathing monster.

Oh, and my research also indicates that you can't convincingly cast Matthew Broderick as a nuclear scientist.

My research indicates that you shouldn't rewrite the same two jokes two dozen times and pretend they're still as funny as they weren't the first time. Who cares if people can't pronounce Dr. Tatopolous' name, or that Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert didn't dig Emmerich and Devlins previous films? It's Gojira, you moron! Class writing, indeed. |

Frankly the recurring mispronounced scientist name gag was only really funny in the Man With Two Brains. Now there's a film that shouldn't be remade under any circumstances at all. I don't care how big a fan anyone is. It's a comic masterpiece and as such should be left well alone to be admired and marvelled at. Especially when put alongside something like Sgt Bilko, where you can marvel at how funny Steve Martin was, then marvel at how he seems to have lost his funny.

QUOTE (NiteFall @ Mar 15 2007, 02:45 AM) Especially when put alongside something like Sgt Bilko, where you can marvel at how funny Steve Martin was, then marvel at how he seems to have lost his funny. I was just trying to remember the exact point where Martin lost the funny. After some deliberation I reckon the downhill slide began with with My Blue Heaven, spluttered during L.A. Story, and HouseSitter was particularly so-so. Bilko just became the whipping boy despite how mediocre the preceding comedy vehicles were. Still, it was rather dire. But from the trailers alone, I would be prepared to say that The Pink Panther wrenches the Wanky Wooden Spoon Award from Bilko's iron grip. After putting in some decent, serious turns in Grand Canyon, A Simple Twist of Fate and The Spanish Prisoner, he really should've been more selective with the comedy roles he chose. He'd make a much better serious actor at this point in time I reckon. This post has been edited by Ade: Mar 15 2007, 10:29 AM |

Steve Martin's mistake was Three Amigos!.
Because you can't do better than that. All downhill from that point on. |

Actually, that is a very valid point. Although I'd be inclined to move the 'funny/not so funny' slide marker to just after Planes, Trains & Automobiles. QUOTE (Sostie @ Mar 14 2007, 04:04 PM) I lost hope in that when Lucas turned down Frank Darabont's script (a man who can write) in favour of his own!! You only have to see the extras on the Indy DVDs to see Spielberg laughing at the plans Lucas had for the franchise if he was let loose on them. He's only written the story though, as with all the other Indy films so I'm still quietly optimistic that it could be quite good. Maybe. EDIT actually I'd be more optimistic if Lucas had just got Laurence Kasdan in to write it. This post has been edited by Sir_Robin_the_brave: Mar 15 2007, 01:21 PM |

QUOTE (Sostie @ Mar 14 2007, 03:56 PM) Actually I have(had!) and issue of Look-In Magazine at home which was printed just after the release of Star Wars. There is a Lucas interview in which it seems he nearly went straight into the prequels! When asked if he was going to do a follow-up in view of the success of Star Wars, he said he hadn't really thought about it but was toying with the idea of doing a film about some characters early years like The Life Of Obi Wan or The Life Of Han Solo! And twenty odd years later he still hadn't really thought about it but went on and made the films anyway. |
