Really enjoyed Extras, I felt that Andy was a good character since he is quite distinct from Brent in that he does seem to realise that he isn't great (which Brent believed throughout the Office) and had a bit more backbone as shown by his confrontation with Stiller (loved the ''It still counts!'' bit). I also liked the relationship between Andy and Maggie since it seemed quite sweet and will probably be an important feature as the series progresses.
As for Ricky Gervais in general, my opinion of him has improved somewhat, I think he is a great writer and a fairly decent comic actor but I still think he's a shit stand-up. Although he did talk about that in the Guardian Guide andI suppose that only starting after he was famous would explain why he isn't as good as the more experienced comics. Still, I don't consider him a genius but I do think he is a talented man. |

I really hoped Kemp would be revealed to be telling the truth about his killer credentials and would floor Jones, but I guess that would be going against the spirit of the show to appease my wanting to see Jones beaten to a pulp. How can he act so unconvincingly when he's playing himself?!?!
I think this show is going to shape up to be rather highly regarded. I don't know if it'll have the same kind of longevity as The Office though, as some of these Celebrity appearances are going to date fairly quickly (I'd imagine). Gervais and Merchant have chosen their celebs well so I don't think it'll date as badly as it would have done if they'd gone with the definition of 'celebrity' ITV seems to have (ie half-cut TV presenters and ladies who get their chesticles out). I adore Maggie, I think she's a tremendous character. She's got the foot-in-mouth syndrome that Brent had but has great sympathy and dippy likeability too. |
