The hand-lettered font is classy, but the design overall is boring. I'm sure an author with as much sway as Rowling is able to have her say as to what the cover looks like, and this looks like a swing and a miss to me. |

It is trying to be neutral but I wouldn't look at it twice. |

The website said it was out on Monday, which was a shock to Waterstones staff when I went to buy it. I've got it on order. Jasper is doing a talk in Leeds next Wednesday. I sadly (and very rarely) already have something planned. Blooming annoying. Can anyone who goes ask when the next 'Shades Of Grey' book will be out? |

I used to be one of those thousands of people who enjoy the imagery and mythos surrounding Cthulhu without ever having read any Lovecraft. That has now changed, and in the past few months I've managed to read a lot of his work. I have to say that At The Mountains of Madness and The Whisperer in Darkness are particularly sublime. I'm currently getting stuck into The Dunwich Horror, cannot wait. It's the fine and almost ludicrous amount of detail that he brings to such short stories that I just eat up. Fantastic.

I really enjoyed Kermode's book, though I might be a bit biased towards it since it was the reason why I got to interview him. Finished this a week or so ago; very good, but I felt the last chapter on American remakes of foreign language films was a little laboured. I will have a proper read through your blog when I get five minutes. In other news, I've now joined the Game of Thrones junkie wagon. Only 90 pages in but I can see this becoming addictive . . . |

A quarter of the way into the first Game of Thrones and I am hooked. I am flying to San Diego in September and I can't wait just so I can sit and read the whole way.

^ For some reason I'm finding it hard going. Every time I pick it up I usually manage 50-60 pages, but then I put it down and I just don't have the interest to pick it up again. I've been reading it for three weeks and I'm only now just over half way through, which is slow even for me.

I've neeeearly finished the first one. So long, so long... Very good though. I think it'll be several years before I finish because I only read about 20 pages a day on the bus.

Finished the first four books Game of Thrones books.
Martin certainly packed a lot into book four (or the second half of book 3 if you are being pedantic). Interesting to see how the characters are devloping, some genuine surprises in this book (including the very last page!). Taking a break now, though, as I've been in Westeros since July! Next up, Zombie Cows. |

Thursday Next fans! The new book 'The Woman Who Died A Lot' is out tomorrow. I finally picked up One Of Our Thursdays Is Missing at the weekend. Which now makes two Thursday Next books I need to catch up with before TWWDAL sees its paperback release, not to mention the Nursery Cryme novels The Fourth Bear and The Big Over Easy. As one of this forum's earliest and staunchest advocates of Jasper Fforde, I have gotten seriously lax with my Fforde-ing activities. A quarter of the way into the first Game of Thrones and I am hooked. I am flying to San Diego in September and I can't wait just so I can sit and read the whole way. I can't seem to bring myself to break the spine of Book One yet. Sooooo many other books I want to get through first, not least of all Jasper's affordementioned tomes, and a long-overdue re-read of The Hobbit before mid-December. I also have three books by Scarlett Thomas that I want to get read: Going Out (2002), PopCo (2004) and Our Tragic Universe (2010). I absolutely loved her brilliant The End Of Mr. Y (2006), and have been itching to read the rest of Thomas' output ever since. I just made a start on Going Out last thing last night. Not much happened yet, since I only made it two pages in before I dozed off. However, I can report that it did involve a Pot Noodle. Updates and verdicts to follow. Eventually. |
