Books 2nd Edition, Foreword by m0r1arty Options

Tricky one. There are bits when reading that I feel aren't that important (the dream bits and the historical bits) and that's when I zone out.

The bits with Goss, Subby, the female officer who's name escapes me and Dane all have plenty of merit, it's the bits inbetween and the wiffling on that I don't like.

Still can't get into Kraken. I've decided I don't like it BUT I'm going to read to the end.

I finished one long book today (The Honourable Schoolboy by John Le Carre, which was good, if aimless and lacking in the strong central conflict that drove Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and moved on to another, even longer one. (IT by Stephen King.)

Picked up a Sarah Waters book today having returned Kraken.

I was massively disappointed with Kraken. I tried and I tried and I tried but it was too wordy and full of piffling gobcrap. Shame.

I made the mistake of starting The Hunger Games last night. For some reason, I didn't expect to enjoy it. I was up until well past 3 finishing it; I just couldn't put it down!

ETA: Are the rest of the books in the series that good? I mean, they're not brilliantly written, but the story was engrossing.

That's pretty much the Hunger Games! They're all pretty good. They get darker as they go on. Well, more noticeable in 'Mockingjay'.

The Night Watch. So far, so average. I'm hoping it picks up in the second half.

I've the second Hunger Games waiting on my drawers to read after that, although I have heard it's not as good at the first. You're right about the first one being unputdownable J-bomb.

I really enjoyed it, but I think she may require repeated readings.
The TV adaptation wasn't great.

Try the Pratchett book of the same title. That is one of my favourites. It often brings a lump to my throat.

Yeah, the first is the best in my opinion, but the other two are good. Catching Fire is very similar to the first, but Mockingjay is a bit of a different monster.

I've spent the best part of the last three days listening to the audiobook of I, Partridge: We Need To Talk About Alan, as read by the author and it is a real treat. As well as being terrifically funny, thanks both the strength of the writing but also due to Steve Coogan's intonation and occasional mispronunciations, it's a great insight into the character. Unlike a lot of "in character" books that I've read, it isn't just a collection of the best bits from other media featuring the character (the best example of this I can think of is I Am America (And So Can You) by Stephen Colbert) but it offers a real commentary on the other appearances of the character and acts as a logical continuation of him. The real highlights of the book come from hearing Alan's take on moments from Knowing Me, Knowing You and I'm Alan Partridge, particularly the heroic image he paints of himself during the "Smell my cheese!" scene, as well as his essential bitterness, which he badly hides under a layer of passive-aggressive cheer.

A genuine pleasure for fans of Alan Partridge.

Well, that's book four of Game Of Thrones finished. I've ordered 'A Dance With Dragons'. Whoever warned that they were addictive wasn't wrong. I can't wait for it's arrival.

I am worried about when that one's done though. The bit at the back of 'A Feast For Crows' mentions that he expected to release 'A Dance With Dragons' the following year, and that was dated 2005! It only came out this year. How long will the wait be once I've read it?

I'm in the middle of Matter, by Iain M. Banks at the moment. Very good so far, although it does seem to be taking a while getting to the point!

I get the distinct feeling that a lot of what appears to be inconsequential detail - at first glance - is going to prove to be very significant later on.

As with most of his books, I strongly suspect I'll get more out of it the second time through.

No one knows, though it may be that the demands of the TV show may compel him write it faster, lest that show run out of source material to adapt before its time. Basically, the books will get written when they get written, and we fans have to grin and bear it. Annoyingly.
