Maybe try Mass Effect if you like a bit of sci-fi. Thanks Hayleigh, I remember being interested in this game before having my console... I'll 2nd and 3rd this recommendation. The best game of 2007 (in my opinion, of course) It's got a very strong sci-fi setting, well rounded characters (and lots of them), a highly involving plot and you get to have sex with aliens! (sort of) I'm still waiting impatiently for news of the sequel, it seems unlikely that we'll see it this year now though. Shame. Is anyone else playing the Dawn Of War 2 multiplayer beta? I'm shockingly bad, but if you fancy adding me my Live account thingy is keios1980.

To chip in on the Jessop recommendations, I reckon if you couldn't commit the time to Fable II then Fallout 3 (as amazing as it is) and Mass Effect may not be ideal for you as they really do require a time commitment to play it properly.
I will second Julie's recommendation for getting on Live and playing Left 4 Dead with us (which reminds me, Julie, we really need to play Left 4 Dead some more) and Gears is great fun as well. |

The difference between Fable II and Fallout 3/Mass Effect is that the latter are not absolute crap.

Fallout 3 and Mass Effect take considerably more of a time investment that Fable II and Adam said that he doesn't even have the time to play that properly. |

The difference between Fable II and Fallout 3/Mass Effect is that the latter are not absolute crap. Beat me to it. True, Mass Effect and Fallout are time-consuming games, but you're rewarded much more for your time with the excellent story and characters of Mass Effect, and the atmosphere and setting of Fallout. I'd choose Mass Effect. It's got a better story than Fallout, and costs nothing to buy now. I saw it for £7 in Game a few days ago, that's like £1 for 5 hours of game. |

Or one pound for every cm of dust that's gathering on it's barely opened box. Anyway, my point still stands, they are hugely time consuming games and therefore really not for the casual gamer. |

I'd say that Mass Effect is a game you can quite easily just power through playing the main story missions and still enjoy. That's what I did on the first playthrough and I still felt I got a rich gaming experience because the plot is so involving. The next playthrough I took it easy and explored more.
I haven't played Fable 2 or Fallout 3 (yet) so I can't comment on the comparisons. Actually I might grab Fallout 3 on the way home tonight. |

I may have to give Mass Effect another chance but just power through it as you suggested. I'm all about forgiveness. |

I've tried Mass Effect twice and never got further than the first visit to the Citadel as other games have taken my interest away. I think I'll try and power through at some point.

I got to the Citadel and gave up, then came back to it a few months later and it completely changed my mind.
If you don't like big conversations, you won't like it. But I like those, the story feels more like a movie. Albeit one that I've been watching for 25 hours now and still have only done 2 of the main worlds. |

First Final Fantasy XIII trailer. And yes, I know, if you didn't like any of the other ones there will be precisely nothing to make you want this one. And yes, it doesn't make any sense does it? And yes, that battle system does look like a shinier version of the one in Crisis Core doesn't it? And yes, it's going to be horribly linear and restrictive compared to Fallout 3 /Oblivion. Personally though, I think it looks quite promising and very, very pretty. But then again I would say that. I'm currently playing through FF IX again on my PSP after all.
