ADVENTURELAND
From the director of Superbad and starring the lead (Jesse Eisenberg) of The Squid & The Whale, I suggest you go in expecting more of the latter and less of the former. Bill Hader may well provide aome laughs (which seemed to all be in the trailer) but this was a far more mature film than I expected. It’s the summer of 1987 and a college grad works in a rundown theme park to raise some cash for college, and falls in love etc etc. A nice, well performed slice of romance and (for me) nostalgia. The soundtrack contains some real gems.

Indeed. And seemingly looking, at times, a little boss-eyed.

Hamlet 2

Steve Coogan plays a failing drama teacher who decides to save his career and drama department by writing a bizarre musical sequel to Hamlet for his unruly class.
A bit of a parody of the many 'inspirational teacher' films out there with some amusing moments and decent writing in parts (most notably the songs, which definitely have the Pam Brady (South Park/Team America) hallmark) but ultimately a bit of a mess, tone-wise and there's not really a strong enough storyline or decent enough characters to care about. Coogan does well (despite his off-putting American accent) and his experienced comedy performance helps to keep the film together and ticking along as best it can, but there's not much else to shout about.

Saw a load of films on British Airways on demand thingy on the flight to and from Florida. It made the trip fly by:

I Love You, Man I thought it was great with all the characters being likeable and all the things that the characters did being believable and what I would expect them to do. I also loved that it didn't take the obvious route I was expecting, very much in the same way that Forgetting Sarah Marshall did. Lovely.

Monsters Vs Aliens Some funny gags but was a kids film afterall. Insectasaurus was brilliant.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine I enjoyed it actually but I think this may have been because I had heard nothing but bad things about it so I wasn't really paying too much about it.

Terminator Salvation See above.

The Hangover Very enjoyable film but no where near as "Hilariously Pants Wettingly Funny" as everyone had said it would be.

Then last night:

X-Men: The Last Stand Having never bothered to watch this and hearing nothing but bad things I finally stuck it on as I'd recorded it over the weekend. I knew it was going to be shit but after apalling CGI Patrick Stewart I almost switched it off there and then. I finished it and have no comment really. It was poo.

The Thing

It looked good on the big screen but the audio kept going in and out of sync. It was weird because it would go in and out during the same scene rather than the projectionist getting his timing wrong between reels (do they still have reels?).

Yes, they do still have reels, but most cinemas now just splice them together into one extra-big reel so it won't need changing. The sound actually runs as an embedded track alongside the film, with a slight delay in it. When you thread up a projector you have to leave a small amount of slack between the projector and the audio reader, so they remain in sync. The film should be pulled through at the same rate by two mechanisms after each part, so as to minimise the tension on the film and prevent snapping. What's probably happened is that the belt connecting the two pulling mechanisms is on it's way out, resulting in the film not being pulled at a constant rate through the sound reader.

That sounds about right then. I was going to walk at one point but it then snapped back into place. It was just every now and then. It was only cheap anyway.

Kitchen Stories

A group of Swedish scientists travel to Norway to observe the kitchen habits of single men in order to design the perfect kitchen. One observer and one observee, after initial hostilities, become friends, and the film goes from there.

Sweet without being saccharine, it's a really lovely film. Thanks, dan, for pointing it out aaaaaages ago.

District 9

Thoroughly enjoyable Sci-Fi. The casting of Wikus was spot on and although you could see some bits coming a mile off, it was still genuinely exciting thoughout. The CGI was spectacular as well... especially the later transforamtion of Wikus

The Hurt Locker - badda bing, badda boom. Very good. Tense, fun and interesting with some great performances too. Some of the subplot stuff didn't quite work as well, but it was mostly excellent.
