Julie vs. King Kong is certainly a film I'd pay to see.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World was great fun and it made me smile lots. I enjoyed it so much that I found it easy to dismiss the bits that I felt were missing or 'not quite right' compared to the books. I understand what Ellie meant about it being a bit messy/bitty but I felt parts of the novels were like that too, certainly mirroring Scott's messed-up world and, in general, I was impressed at how the main themes and ideas were squeezed into 2 action-packed hours, although it did mean that it wasn't possible to really give dimension to some characters. Not quite perfect but hugely entertaining, some lovely bits to look at and some excellent performances! (I actually liked Cera more than I thought I would in the role, he was perhaps a bit 'too' likeable and vulnerable, but I thought he got the cluelessness of Scott just about right, but I may be alone in my disappointment with Schwarzman's 'ultra-hammy' Gideon.) I thought Schwarzman should have gone even hammier.

I like it. It's flawed and I'd probably never watch it again, but it's fun for what it is and, in the party scene, it has one amazing sequence. Different strokes & all that but I found 500 Days horribly & coldly over-contrived. It picked everything it thought was supposed to be cool to push along a pretty sub-standard story. It was like constantly having your intelligence insulted by 16 year old Hipster. Bronagh also loathed it. Actually made her pretty angry. Weird, huh? Anyway, Expendables - Awful, awful, film. But not one I couldn't enjoy elements of, despite the poor editing, appallingly bad dialogue & lack of any cohesive storyline (I'm aware a lot of action films are like this, but really, if you're 20 mins into a film & the story hasn't made itself clear, that's a failure) some of the action was enjoyable & as people have said - Big, Stupid & Fun. It doesn't balance out though & this is mostly pretty poor & in the end a terrible waste of a great Action cast ensemble. This post has been edited by Rua: Sep 2 2010, 10:41 AM |

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
I really enjoyed it, don't know that I'd have bothered going to the cinema to see it but there's some really fun characters in it, especially Steve the monkey and the policeman. |

I watched a whole heap of films yesterday.
The Sweet Hereafter - Great. Ian Holm is amazing and it really captures the feelings of inarticulate grief and rage that erupt in a small community after a tragedy (i speak from experience.) Cemetery Junction Whilst it is funny, anyone going in expecting a comedy might be disappointed since it's more of a coming of age drama. Full of wit, warmth and vitality, but also a streak of darkness and an understanding of the way life can disappoint. Phenomenal cast. The Great McGinty Preston Sturges' debut and a political satire as funny and true now as it was 70 years ago. A homeless man winds up governor thanks to his involvement with gangsters, then finds himself losing everything when he actually tries to do something good. The Maltese Falcon I always forget how funny this film is. A rightly loved classic full of beautiful cinematography and ageless cool. |

I really didn't enjoy The Expendables. I went in expecting a terrible script and plot and lots of explosions and still was bored to tears. The Arnie cameo was especially rubbish, I was really excited about it and he wasn't even there. Crap! Different strokes & all that but I found 500 Days horribly & coldly over-contrived. The line that always gets me is "I'm not Baby Brent anymore. I am Chicken Brent! And I'm finally contributing to society!" It really sums up the silliness of the film. |

Faces (1968)
John Cassavetes film about a married couple (played by John Marley and Lynn Carlin) whose relationship disintegrates after the husband asks for a divorce and the two go on their separate journeys of self-destruction over the course of one night. Like most of Cassavetes' films, it's very loose and jarring in the rawness of its style and jagged editing, but it also has some great insights into male insecurity and the general milieu of the late 60s. Thief (1981) Michael Mann's debut film, in which James Caan plays a diamond thief who goes in with a criminal organisation in the hope of a big score, only to find himself biting off more than he could chew. Being a debut, it's much rougher than Mann's films would become, but the basics of his style - shooting at night, professional criminals who compromise their own code, odd musical choices - are all in place and it makes for a cool, solidly made thriller. |

Annoying - I think We're Alone Now is on tonight, but clashes with several other things, and I am also a bit scared of watching it, seeing as it was shown at Fright Fest a while back.

It's on the Really channel! What's that? It also clashes with The King Is Dead. You don't want to miss Simon Bird do you? |

It's on the Really channel! What's that? It also clashes with The King Is Dead. You don't want to miss Simon Bird do you? It usually shows Women who breastfeed their 20 year old sons and Octogenarian body builders so what a documentary about Tiffany and her stalkers is doing on there is anyone's guess. And it's Katy Wix, actually... |
