I wasn't that gripped this week. The plot was a little dull, the deductions a bit meh and Holmes & Watson's sparring/chemistry not as entertaining. Did still enjoy it, but I'm hoping they didn't start the series on a high they'll never top.

Didn't Holmes pretty much invent the whole 'sinister orientals' thing? I really was expecting an oblique reference to it, possibly coming from a racist cabbie.

I'm no expert in Holmes, but were there any "nice" foreigners in the Holmes stories?

I think there was quite a distrust of the "Orientals" in London at the turn of the century. I read this week that Fu Manchu was inspired directly by the increasing amount of deaths in opium dens in London.

Occasionally, but they usually ended up dead at the hands of the nasty foreigners!

Aww I hearts Bob but he isn't an actor. I liked their R&H(D). In fact, Mark Gatiss (with Jeremy Dyson) wrote a brilliant episode set in a department store and very Avengers inspired.

Finally got round to watching the first two episodes, and thoroughly enjoyed them both. The first was slightly better than the second, I thought.

The 'Mycroft' character looks interesting. I thought that Mark Gatiss was channelling John Steed at first, with the suit, bolly and pretty companion.

I remembered something else which annoyed me - Moriarty (or the suggestion of him). Surely Sherlock Holmes is much more than his nemesis, plus I think if they're going to do more they've potentially lumbered themselves with it.

Widnes Rugby League used to have a plyer called Paul Moriarty, and if you go to 2.50 on this youtube clip, you'll see him commit one of the most cowardly and brutal fouls I've ever seen in a game of rugby.


This lead to our club commentator calling him 'the evil Moriarty' every time we played them after that.

Saw the trailer for Sunday's episode as I was leaving for work this morning - looks good!

A good ending to the series, even if the final scene was a real 'For Fuck's sake' moment. A pretty good plot, some wonderful dialogue and character moments, and a satisfying final revelation.

It'll be interesting to see what the show does with Moriarty. The actor's performance was a bit strange, but it's hard to judge based on so little screentime.


I hope that they don't leave us hanging for too long.
