Run, Fatboy, Run

A by-the-numbers Rom-Com, interspersed with the odd scene from Spaced.

I had a hard time warming to Simon's character, he was such a tosser in the first part of the film that I didn't really buy his transformation at the end (and at the same time the change in Hank Azaria's character was as equally jarring. "Have him shout at the kid, that will make him a bad man!"). I think it would have worked better if Simon's character had shown some redeeming qualities - and if Hank’s had done something nasty - a little earlier in the film.

Other than that though, it was pretty harmless and reasonably enjoyable.

Dylan Moran had the best lines in a performance reminiscent of Bill Murray in Tootsie.

And Thandie Newton. Wow.

Absolutely. There are few worse things someone can do, and I'm not sure the film or the character really took it seriously enough. I would have cut his nuts off.

Entertaining film, though.

I watched Mallrats with the commentary on Saturday, although what it highlighted to me was that I have not watched Mallrats recently enough to understand it, and need to watch the film properly again.

Yeah, I didn't dislike it, it just didn't make a lot of sense!

Das Boot: The Director's Cut

I can't fault it on any level (well, maybe the synth heavy score) but I couldn't help feel that I was expecting something more from it. I don't think it helped that I knew how it ended.

Yes, I already posted my thoughts in the Coming Soon! thread, but I'm still grinning about the film today. Bloody good fun.

I saw that on saturday.
I totally agree with your review. A great balance of humour and ... more serious(but still kind of humorous) bits. I like the little Delicatessen reference in there.

Great review, Ed. Just wanted to repost my thought in case it doubly convinced anyone else to watch...

Out of the Blue (2006)

An extraordinary film about a real event I knew next to nothing about.

I expected it to be like 'United 93', in reality it was more like 'Black Hawk Down'. Beautifully and artistically made, amazing sound design, and with a strong and damning message. This isn't documentary style distance, it's a commentary on the lack of care in any community and the dangers of being utterly unprepared for violent crime.

Before watching it I wondered why the families of the victims would allow this film to be made, after watching it I wondered why the New Zealand government allowed it to be made. Of course this is a film, not fact, but as it's presented, the failure of individuals to recognise or care about mental illness in their midst and the mishandling of the police response is genuinely shocking. Shouting at the screen shocking.

Tragic, intelligent, compelling cinema and an important comment on society as a whole.

If it wasn't true, you'd never believe it.

Highly recommended.

Yes and Yes. Hadn't heard of it until now, will seek it out.

Will also finally get around to watching my copy of Black Hawk Down in the meantime.

Alien 3
Still one of the strangest additions to any successful francise. In terms of approach it's almost an anti-sequel - bigger not being better. A very underrated film, and for me ranks among Fincher's best.

Date Movie
The only reason I watched this was for Alyson Hannigan. Not for a laughs, because there were few, if any (their idea of funny was having Napolean Dynamite wear a Don't Vote For Pedro t-shirt)!

It did raise two questions:

a) will anyone ever make a spoof of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker standards?

and

b) did this movie ruin any chances of Hannigan getting a lead in a proper romantic-comedy, which I'm sure she'd be great in?

a) Probably not.

b) Probably not. I would guess that she might get such roles off the back of How I met Your Mother at some point.
