Though 1.2 is not my favourite episode, it contains one of my all-time favourite Spaced moments: the look on Brian's face when he opens the door expecting to see Father Christmas and finding only Tim.
Other highlights: Mike presenting Daisy with a land-mine; 'I can hear sex noise!'; 'Look at them - they're all so thin!'. |

The 2001 homage in front of the fridge is what Spaced is all about as far as I'm concerned.
Though who puts half a Magnum back in the freezer? |

So many excellent moments in this episode. The little things and the big things all conspire to make this bloody brilliant. As for the little things there are the brief moments where you can't help but laugh, for instance, Tim's room after having unpacked and the moment after Twist says "Tim seems nice" and we see him drawing with a look of sour hatred and contempt.
My favourite moment in this episode is Tim and Mikes conversation outside the party spawning from a hatred of "Timewarp". Tim: They were playing the Timewarp Mike, I hate the Timewarp! Mike: Daisy likes it. Tim: So what?! I hate it! It's boil in the bag perversion for sexually frustrated accountants and first year drama students with too many posters of Betty Blue, The Blues Brothers, Big Blue and Blue Velvet on their blue bloody walls! Mike: It's just a song. Tim: I DON'T CARE! I hate it, I don't want to hear it! I don't want to hear it a party least of all a party I'm supposed to be throwing! (Then comes Mikes excellent shaking of Tim...) Genius. |

QUOTE (Chapman Baxter @ Aug 7 2005, 08:43 AM) the look on Brian's face when he opens the door expecting to see Father Christmas and finding only Tim. Absolutely. ![]() Classic. Also: - the non-sex joke is funny, but more importantly that little moment does a lot toward establishing a bond, particularly in 1.2 where Tim and Daisy are antagonizing each other for most of episode. ("Not if you don't want to."....."I didn't say that." does too. Top deliveries from both JS and SP) - The clock gag... because that shit happens when you're blocked. Too often in my case. - The fact that every time I watch the episode, I notice something new that Daisy's draped in tinfoil that I hadn't noticed before. - After Twist insults Marsha, Daisy laughs it off but Tim's got that look of "Now, remind me why she's your friend again?" Later when they're sitting at the table, Daisy's got a variation of the same face. - Katie Pegg's withering glare. (You have to wonder what she and Sailor Moon find to talk about. - "Hullooooooo, it's me. The weeeeeirdoooo from upstairs." God, I love Julia Deakin. |

The 'fake sex noise' cutaway scene was an absolute classic, one of several key standout moments I kept remembering long after my fragmented viewing patterns during Spaced's first airing. The character positioning of the scene, with Tim in the foreground engrossed in his PlayStation, and Daisy in the background jumping almost childlike on the sofa, was just (and still is) so damned funny - it stuck in my mind for ages afterwards. And the dialogue either side of this wonderfully brief cutaway sequence was a fantastic framing for what remains an iconic Spaced moment for me.
And as Zoe has rightly mentioned, the 2001/refridgerator homage, along with Field Of Dreams' "If we have it, they will come", and the Close Encounters homage at the foot of the stairs (preceeded of course by the brilliantly eery of "Join Us...") really drove home the fantastic otherworldliness of the series. But as well as the brilliant movie homages of course, there are so many great character moments: The first proper introduction of Mike: Tim: "I think you may have missed the puppet show, though" Girls: "Fuck Off!!" Tim: "What did you say?!?!" Mike: "They said 'fuck off'" Tim: "I know what they said, Mike!" (I just love Mike's pronunciation there) Tim inviting Brian (I won't quote the entire, brilliantly mirrored exchange): Tim: "There'll be girls at the party" Brian: "Really?" Tim: "Yes" Brian: "Mmmmm..." And of course, Marsha's catchphrase "'Ulloooo" to the paperboy at the very end. So many other moments to mention.... If I'm honest, I would say Episode 2 was truly where the series first fired on all cylinders for me. This post has been edited by Ade: Aug 8 2005, 12:17 AM |

Brian making the save and taking the coat to 'Tim and Daisy's room', followed by the cowboy music, the heroic slo-mo, the little finger gun, and then the perfectly timed prat fall.
Perfect execution. |
