Seriously though, this one has been in the pipe for quite a while now, I think it was first announced two to three years ago. Development has been protracted and sketchy, and the first screen shots were only seen a couple of months ago. Now it looks like it is back to square one again.

What's this I hear about a Star Trek TV series being released online for free, and starring most of the original series cast? Is it any good?

Something is telling me it's written and/or directed by the Vulcan guy from Voyager.

Just watched part one. It's a fairly accomplished fanfilm, but prone to some ropeyness, particularly in the CGI and screenplay areas.

There's also Star Trek New Voyages from a similar place (not checked it out yet).

It explains Star Trek V, I guess.

Star Trek V was a deeply flawed movie, but there are elements in it that I like. There are some really nice uses of hand-held camera and the action sequences, such as the storming of Paradise City look great - Shatner emulates desert epics like Lawrence of Arabia in these scenes. Sadly, nothing can match the powerful opening sequence, though the campfire discussion between Kirk & McCoy about how precious life is comes close.

Shatner was pressured to incude hefty doses of humour in the script because of the success of The Voyage Home. Things also didn't help when the effects guy (who had previous worked on Altered States - to great acclaim) failed to deliver the spectacular visuals he promised. The sets by Herman Zimmerman (who worked on the Next Generation) look cheap and tacky, like sets for television, in fact and many of the practical effects (such as the rocket-boots and shuttle landings) look unimpressive.

The finale was also underwhelming because Paramount were too cheap to spring for the costumes for the rock-like creatures that were supposed to spring up and attack Kirk & co. Shatner wanted seven or eight of them, Paramount said they could have one of them (they shot test-footage, which can be found on the extras on DVD), but Shatner ultimately decided that one rock-like creature didn't look menacing enough. This, coupled with adverse shooting conditions, meant that a finale had to be cobbled together in post-production using existing footage of Lawrence Luckenbill as a ghostly and vengeful apparition of Sybok.

I'm not really making excuses for Star Trek V, I thought that I would fill anyone who is interested in on some of the problems encountered during production that made it the movie it is.

When Star Trek V was going to be released on DVD as a special edition, Shatner approached Paramount to give him some money (not a HUGE amount) to fix the climax of the movie so it more closely resembled what he originally wanted (including CGI rock creatures). They turned him down, yet they threw money at the special edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a movie that people hold in about the same regard as V.
