Dorian Gray.
Not feeling it. Could have quite happily left half way through and that's not something I would normally do. It's not that it was so God awful I was just so bored with it. And the ending was in no way bold enough. Ax |

Kitchen Stories A group of Swedish scientists travel to Norway to observe the kitchen habits of single men in order to design the perfect kitchen. One observer and one observee, after initial hostilities, become friends, and the film goes from there. Sweet without being saccharine, it's a really lovely film. Thanks, dan, for pointing it out aaaaaages ago. woo! it's ace, isn't it? i watched 'broken embraces'. i liked it and kinda fell for ms cruz... |

I'm certainly going to look for Kitchen Stories now - by the same director of the delightful O'Horten. A man called Bent Hamer. I love a bit of Scandinavi-quirk.

There's a film showing at the arts centre every week for the next four weeks that I want to see, namely Moon, Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker and Broken Embraces.
Having just been to see the rather enjoyable Coco Avant Chanel, it's going to be a good month for movies. Marvelleuse. eta: I'm certainly going to look for Kitchen Stories now - by the same director of the delightful O'Horten. A man called Bent Hamer. I love a bit of Scandinavi-quirk. Me too, now! I very nearly rented out O'Horten the other week since I've been wanting to see it for months - but I selected Love In The Time Of Cholera instead, which I really didn't expect to enjoy quite as much as I did. And if you haven't already seen it Sefi, I would recommend you check out Factotum (another Bent Hamer film) which features a surprisingly excellent turn by Matt Dillon. |

Land of the Dead
Enjoyed it a lot more this time, although that's because I absolutely hated it first time round. Asia looked cute too. |

Broken Embraces
Very, very good, as Almodovar's films often are. Of his other films it is closest in tone and style, though not necessarily content, to Bad Education, as both are overtly Hitchcockian in style, down to the Bernard Hermann-esque score (though it veered a bit closer to the pastiche of A Close Shave than actual Hermann) as well the obvious similarities in plot since both films deal with directors confronting or unravelling a mystery in their past. Penelope Cruz is magnetic, as she always is when working with Almodovar, to the film's detriment since it does languish somewhat whenever she is not on-screen, though Luis Homar makes for a great lead and carries the film along whenever she is absent. It's a slightly listless film, in a good way. Like a lot of his recent films it takes its time getting to where it is going, content to let the audience enjoy the company of his characters and ponder the mystery. I don't think that it is quite on a par with his last five films, but it is still a top-quality film and, despite being a bit self-involved (the fact that the film-within-a-film is basically Women On The Verge Of A Nervouse Breakdown seems like a rather insidery little comment) and overlong I would still probably put it in my top 10 of the year.
