Finally watched Dredd.

Still not the Dredd film I hope for, but was actually pretty good. Bar the overuse of slowmo aka look-how-good-this-is-in-3d-vision.

True. But at least it made sense to the story for once.

Yeah, and it was OK for a while, bit it quickly became apparent it was being used a bit more than needed because I am sure it looked great in 3D...which I wasn't watching it in biggrin.gif

*SPOILER* (written in white)

Only thing that bugged me was at the end when Dredd gave Mama some of the slowmo drug just before he threw her off. It was an unnecessary move to make the death more traumatic than it needed to be. AFAIK there was no plot device reason for him to do that. And for Dredd to effectively torture someone before death is completely out of character.

The Dark Knight Rises - I enjoyed it more this second time around than I did at the cinema. It's a lot more flawed than The Dark Knight (which I still think is the best comic book movie) was, and it's far too long. It tries to be more complex than it actually is, and for a Batman movie there's not much Batman in it (though I didn't mind that this time, as I knew it beforehand). It's enjoyable, it just couldn't match its predecessor.

It's also very silly how everyone keeps saying "rises" all the time as some weird nod to the audience.

Wreck-It Ralph - I saw this twice this week, with two different groups. I love it. If you didn't know it was Disney, you would assume it was a Pixar film, which really showed the leap in quality Disney Animation has undergone in the last couple of years. It's just brilliant, and I wasn't bored at all seeing it a second time. It's just a genuinely good film.

Cloud Atlas

Having watched the five-minute extended promo trailer countless times, and getting a lump in the throat every single time, I'd already made up my mind in advance that I was going to love this film.

And I was right.

Terrific cast (some of them unrecognisable in their multiple role appearances), gorgeous soundtrack, and visually arresting. It's remarkable how the differing eras depicted throughout don't seem awkwardly juxtaposed as the film swings back-and-forth through time; it all just seems to flow perfectly, the narrative undercurrent uniting these disparate segments with common thematic purpose, and beautifully done too.

If there was one minor niggle, I suppose it would be the Clockwork Orange-y language that Tom Hanks et al speak during the dystopian future segments - I did struggle to catch precisely what they were saying much of the time, though I caught enough to grasp what was going on. That at least is one reason I would need to watch it again (and more than another once most likely), but reading the book will no doubt fill in the blanks in the meantime.

Anyway, the fact remains that I desperately want to see this film again - I can easily see it becoming a long-term favourite of mine. It's like six mini-movies re-mixed into one cohesive whole. I heard mention on some internet preview/review that each vignette deserves a full feature version of their own, and I'd certainly agree with that, for the most part.

Roll on DVD release day.

Saw a preview of Mud this morning, Matthew McConaughey was brilliant. The whole thing was really good, it had a sort of Stand By Me/Son of Rambow vibe to it. Hoping to see Iron Man 3 this week.

Agreed, but don't bother seeing it in 3D.

Ah I wonder if Cineworld were doing the same thing because I couldn't book for the 2D showing there.

Certainly could be, I guess it makes sense for them to do it that way, even if it's a shitty tactic.
