This week 2 purveyors of retro rock sounds stand up and be counted
THE WHITE STRIPES Duo hailing from one of the USA's major rock cities, Detroit. Like many before, seemed to make it "big" first in the UK before going global. Rumoured to be siblings, married and/or divorced. Some, all, or none of these are true. From a rather humble upbringings they did good. THE STROKES Quintet hailing from one of the USA's major rock cities, New York. Like many before, seemed to make it "big" first in the UK before going global. From (mostly) privileged upbringings they did good. |

White Stripes. The Strokes' first album was, in my opinion, quite good and was a nice summer record. The second was more or less a retread and the third was a real mess with the odd good tune.
I've yet to hear a White Stripes record that wasn't at worst interesting or, at best, fantastic. They are a really fun band who play with their influences. They also have produced some great videos with Michel Gondry. |

Definitely The White Stripes. The Strokes have had a few good hits, but I can't listen to a whole album of theirs. It just starts to sound like a dirge to me.

Apart from being totally besotted by Meg White, The White Stripes have made some damn good music.
The Strokes went downhill after Last Night. The last album was a rarity...an album I returned after a few listens on the basis of it being crap. Bunch of rich boys playing at being Bohemian. Sound like a second rate Wedding Present too. |

QUOTE (Sostie @ Jan 24 2007, 10:02 PM) The Strokes went downhill after Last Night. The last album was a rarity...an album I returned after a few listens on the basis of it being crap. Bunch of rich boys playing at being Bohemian. Sound like a second rate Wedding Present too. I think that the last album really suffered from a lack of focus. I remember the NME doing a thing about it in their ''anticipated albums of the year'' section where they said ''it's as long as both their previous albums COMBINED and has a whole load of influences thrown in''. This, instead of creating an interesting and entertaining piece of work, created an often aimless and half-formed mess. If they had done more R'n'B flavoured songs, like Out Of Control (I think) on ''Room On Fire'' then they could probably have managed to raise themselves above all their imitators, whereas now they have been swamped by them. |

The White Stripes are better musically, but I personally prefer The Strokes. I like the grunge-fuck-off attitude of 'em.
