30 Rock arrived on my desk this morning. I may get to watch some before I turn in, but I have to finish reading Watchmen first.

I've started to work my way through Mr Show With Bob and David, the seminal HBO sketch show from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Having watched the first season (which is only four episodes long) I can already see why it is so beloved. Like most sketch shows it is hit and miss but its ratio of hits to misses is scarily high, the cast are perfect (Tom Kenny, aka, SpongeBob Squarepants, is hilarious), the scripts are clever and the overall conceit of having the sketches flow into each other before coming around to the beginning again, whilst not new even in 1995, is handled superbly. Probably what impresses me most is how good the acting is in the sketches. It's become a general rule that people acting in sketch shows should be heightened or stagey, which can work but can just as easily be annoying, but Bob and David displayed a willingness to commit to a character that often allows for the tiniest look or movement to be funnier than any single line of dialogue.
Needless to say, I'm hooked and I can't wait to see what else the show has to offer. |

I convinced my mum to watch the first series of 30 Rock but the first episode made her cry because the cat lady had two cats that looked like the two we lost last year, I hope she stuck with it because I think it's brilliant - series 5 starts on Comedy Central in a couple of weeks.

Finished Season 1 of Breaking Bad last night. Pretty dark stuff in places but very good.
I have Season 2 and 3 waiting in the wings. Might start those this evening. |

You've got some great (and incredibly dark) stuff ahead. Season 2 is great, but Season 3 is amazing. I don't think there's anything TV related that I'm looking forward to more than Season 4. |

Finished Northern Exposure series four, and am taking a break from it for a while as I only have two series left to watch (boooooo!).
Might watch Heroes season one next, not sure . . . Watched some more 30 Rock yesterday; it's clever, funny, well written and acted, but for some reason I can't pin down it's leaving me slightly cold. |

If I have any criticisms of 30 Rock, other than how poor I thought Season 4 and the start of 5 were, it's that it doesn't really have all that much of an emotional core to it. There's the Jack and Liz friendship, which develops into quite a sweet relationship over the course of the show, but the rest of the characters are really just mouthpieces for the jokes to flow through.
I don't think that is too much of a problem since the show has no illusions that it is anything other than a joke factory, but it does prevent me from loving in that way that I love equally funny but more emotionally involving contemporaries like Modern Family, Community or Parks and Recreation. |

My friend has bought me season one of Dexter. I've never seen any of it before so am very excited to start watching it.

I've finally gotten around to start watching Trinity - it's a delightfully entertaining bit of fluff, innit? Three epsodes in one sitting already.
