The Spinto Band
At The Cockpit, Leeds. Bouncy American fun. Kind of reminded me of the Monkees with Beatles type head bobbing, I'm not sure why. Anyway, there were dead good. Put a smile on my face. I considered buying a t-shirt but I didn't like any of them. They did a cover of Mr Blue Sky as an encore - it was brill. |

Gogol Bordello, last night at the Birmingham Academy. Despite the Academy being possibly the worst venue in the history of the universe I had a fantastic time. The G-B album is very good, but hearing the songs live brings a whole new dimension. One of the best gigs I have ever been to.

The Divine Comedy
At the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh. As usual, a great gig by Hannon and Co. and a good bit of comedy genius when, upon mentioning that he couldn't have a cig halfway through the gig (due to the smoking ban) a hundred or so ciggies were lobbed in his general direction. "You're not helping, madam!" being his reply. The story has a happy ending, though. He had Nicorette gum. |

Last month I went to see The Broken Family Band at The Scala. They were great. They're slowly getting the attention they deserve.

Billy Joel was fantastich. It was an incredible backing band too. All round excellence.
His guitar tech, "Chain Saw" sang us "Highway To Hell." Either because he wanted to do it or because they are in Australia. Who knows? It was a great performance at that. We all waited patiently for him to play 'Piano Man.' Took a while to start it. I especially loved the way everyone chanted "Bill-y." Someone threw a bra onstage too. Joel also was very hilarious as well as musical. After playing, "The Entertainer" he remarks, "Well those lyrics are a load of shit." And although we were in a crap venue (since there aren't really any good one's in Perth) the sound was terrific. I hope the other cities enjoy. (Bastards get more shows than us...always.) |

Flaming Lips last night at Birmingham NIA. Very good, as per usual. I drank too much wine though. I also had a (brief) chat with Jeff Stuka who I spouted all kinds of drunk nonsense at, for which I must apologise. Good to meet him though.

Oh you lucky devil.
Do the Cheeky girls count? I saw them at our local firworks night and got to see the local radio dj's perving up to them, and *unngggnnnghgghhg* dancing closely. |

Great gig last night at Green Note, a little veggie restaurant in Camden with live music. First were a duo called Isodore & Clay - two guys, two acoustic guitars, lovely. The second guy was quite lame. I didn't catch his name, but he reminded me way too much of Merriman Weir performing "Loving You" (the song he can only remember the drunk version of) - ie you couldn't understand a bloody thing he was singing. The headline act was a guy from Virginia called Paul Curreri. Fabulous guitar, fabulous lyrics, fabulous beard. His brother's band are over here next week, and he made us promise to go see them.
I'd write more, but I'm busy and tired. Check out the links. |

Went to see Muse at the NEC Birmingham on Wednesday night. Fan-bloody-tastic, that they were.
I took some cameraphone pics, but they was all a bit blurrified. This post has been edited by Ade: Nov 19 2006, 09:13 PM |

Just got back from seeing The Bees and I have to say they were fantastic. Best gig I've been to in a long while. It was exactly what I needed on a windy, rainy Sunday night.
Can't get the smile off my face. |

Transgressive Roadshow
Johnny Flynn These lovely folkish stylings didn't go over too well with the crowd, but I thought these fellas were very good. Foals Very enjoyable. Electrotastic. After the top three, these were the best of the rest. Battle On a fantastic night, I enjoyed these the least. Don't know what it was. Confusing because they actually had a good sound. Polytechnic Quite pleasant noisey Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr stuff that just missed the mark. Something just wasn't right. Ladyfuzz Much improved from when last I saw them. Fun, but I think the singer's a bit too mental. Larrikin Love They've got the popular twang that set the crowd a-moving, and I couldn't help but tap a toe or two. Alright. Might be set for big things. The Young Knives Having not heard any of their stuff other than "Weekends and Bleakdays" and "She's Attracted To", I wasn't surprised by the quality of the other tracks but wasn't as moved by them as I should've been. A little disappointing, but splendid nonetheless. The Mystery Jets Top notch. Absolutely magical. And Blaine's a lovely chap, too. |
