Super gutted. I knew he had cancer a while back but because I hadn't heard anything for a while assumed he'd beat it. Had no idea he was so ill (although he was always ill, if you know what I mean).

Thirty three years before 1979 was 1946. Give or take a year, the Beastie Boys' formation was as far removed from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as it is removed from today.

Yeah, very very sad to hear. Currently listening to Licensed to Ill followed by Hot Sauce Committee. Massive contribution to music and film. He (et al) was with me throughout my entire childhood and adulthood to date.

The BBC are reporting that Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak has passed away.

Re Yauch, it was listening to a few of their albums albums this weekend, that I remembered how much I loved them. As a 14 (maybe 15?) year old and witnessing the Intergalactic video on MTV, that cool stuff stays with you. I got the album the Christmas after that, then a few years later picked up a few more albums.

I didn't find out until a couple of years back (when 'Awesome... I shot that' was released) that that great video (and.many of their vids) were done by MCA. So talented.

In terms of cool stuff I didn't know about MCA until this week, I didn't know that he set up his own film distribution company, Oscilloscope Laboratories. They're still a young company, but they've helped a lot of really good and interesting films get out into the world:
