I'm not a big comic fan (certainly not incomparison to some folks here) but i like Alan Moore's stuff and graphic novels like Corto Maltese series (trying brush up on my french - my sis fiance who is French so i need the practice). And i'm going thru an Asterix renaissance too ... i like ancient history esp Celtic stuff so Asterix is a must ... and i like 2000 ad Slaine series for same reason.
I also love illustrational works by Edward Gorey ... not comics really though. As i said, i'm not expert. Sefi x |

been meaning to post this for ages but i keep forgetting - has anyone got a copy of mcsweeney's issue 13? the comics issue?
if you love graphic art this is an amazing book. edited by chris ware it has work in it by daniel clowes, r crumb, art spiegelman, kaz, jeffrey brown ( that'll break your heart ) and many many more, plus essays by glen david gould and john updike. not so much for your 2000ad comics fan but theres a lot of people on here who would love it. i just wondered if anyone else has got a copy. |

McSweeney's? Yeah, I got one. It's hit and miss, some of the bigger names weighed in with some of the more disappointing pieces I thought. Some of it is beautiful though.

this should tell you a bit. mcsweeney's quarterly concern is a book slash magazine. issue 13 was a comics issue. and yes, some of it might not have been the best work but i love chris wares stuff and thought it was beautifully designed. and it introduced me to artists who i hadn't seen before - i'm just waiting for my jeffrey brown from amazon. thats exactlly the reason i like it.
not cos it depresses you, although that helps, but the first thing i read by him was an almost frame by frame depiction of what i went through with this canadian girl. now i'm older and wiser i like the pathetic angst filled memories it conjures up. |

I'm reading the Trigan Empire reprints just now. Two books have been released and the marvellous artwork is from the late and sadly missed Don Lawrence.
The Trigan empire is set on the world of Elekton and features civilisations with contemparies to Ancient Rome, Byzantium and others yet there's technology like energy weapons and atmosphere craft. It's really quite good stuff. |
