Depsite it's recent failings in Season 4, (I have yet to see season 5), Family Guy gets the vote for me.
I have only seen one season of American Dad & though funny it was very hit & miss & is yet to make me belly laugh as I first did upon viewing Family Guy. Also because the gags are so similar in vein it'll be hard for American Dad to surpass it's older sibling. Though they both seem to have a way of making me fancy cartoon characters. American Dad is very funny, but it's in too similar a vein to Family Guy in many ways. And as Rua said, only Family Guy has been able to make me fall off my chair with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard in parts.

Family Guy has the chicken fight.
American Dad does not. Family Guy it is. |

I've voted for American Dad. Having seen some episodes from the second season I notice that it improves markedly as the series goes on. It also shows a generally higher level of writing since the writers can't just do cut-aways all the time like they do on Family Guy and that appeals to me more than the recent seasons of Family Guy do. If it gets a few more seasons under its belt then I reckon American Dad will be able to eclipse Family Guy in quality, even if it never quite matches the commercial success.

Family Guy would fall apart at the seams were it not for the constant name-checking and referencing of washed-up, has-been celebrities who haven't had decent work in decades.
American Dad, on the other hand, has nothing going for it. I can't vote for either. |

One thing that is a bit annoying about Family Guy is that every joke is "Remember that time I..." followed by something preposterous and nothing to do with the plot.
I still laugh. |

I still laugh. I don't - South Park got there first, but this sum's it up just as well: Seth MacFarlane's Nightmare. I assume the "I hate parents!!!!" option means you think they're both shit. If so, it gets my vote. |

Family Guy every time. American Dad does have some funny moments, but Family Guy is hilarious all the time. And I personally love the randomness of the show. People worry too much about things making sense all the time.

For some reason I cannot stand either show. I've tried to like them, but I guess they're not the kind of shows I find really funny. For me, Family Guy seems to try too hard to be funny, while American Dad is just plain dumb. (It's just my opinion, don't hurt me!

I like them both immensely, but as a body of work, Family Guy at the moment.
I also like that it's pisses off the makers of the Simpsons. |

Family Guy started offas a humerous hit and miss show. It then went on to a series of brilliance (Series 3) and now it's started going down hill
American Dad was good but it didn't grab me enough to wath them all. I imagine if I bought the DVD and sat and watched it properly it might be better than Family Guy. My vote goes to Family Guy purely because of series 3. |

Both are a bit self-satisfied and both rely a bit too heavily on "random" humour.
But both, IMO, are mostly hilarious. |
