I'm a second year film and television student who is writing a paper on SPACED in relation to genre categorization. Your thoughts on what genre SPACED comes under would be greatly appreciated! |

I shudder to call it a sitcom because that has all kinds of bad connotations -- laugh track, fat, stupid husband, gorgeous smart-alek wife, precocious children, bad dialog. But I think that's what the networks would call it. Spaced really breaks that mold in the same way that Pushing Daisies or Northern Exposure did. I believe the networks called both of those shows "primetime dramas." And I guess they were, but again, they broke the mold of what a primetime drama could be.

I'd have just said "comedy".

In the promos for the show back in early '99, it advertised it as 'A Sitcom'... just in case we didn't know. ... and thinking back, I was aware that a new sitcom called Spaced was starting, though if I hadn't been, I don't think I'd have got from the rest of the advert that it was a sitcom.
