Favourite stand up, comedian Options

I went along to the Hampstead Comedy club on Saturday night to see Noel Fielding, fantastic it was too.  I was also very pleasantly surprised to see the line-up had been altered to include Rich Hall as well !! Marvellous.  Top night.

Oh, cool - I thought about going to that but was too busy. What a line-up!

Well, I`m sorry to go all mainstream and stuff, but I voted for Peter Kay. As a fat northern bloke myself, I felt I should stand up and be counted. Plus, he`s bloody funny.

As for the rest, Jo Brand was never funny. I`ve not seen much of Bill Hicks, but he seems to have a lot in common with Denis Leary, whose early stuff I love, so I think I`ll check him out.

Pryor is a comedy god, much funnier than Eddie Murphy, even in his RAW phase.

I was suprised not to see Phill Jupitus up there, he can be hilarious at times.

Denis Leary would not have had a career if he hadn't ripped off been, ahem, inspired by Hicks.

You could say that about many comedians though, Eddie Murphy/Richard Pryor, Tim Vine/Bob Monkhouse, even Simon Pegg`s been influenced by Steve Coogan and there`s times I can tell that.

Hicks just seems a little too....intense for me, I dunno. Like I say, I`ll check out and get back to you on it.

leary ripped off hicks word for word on his album 'no cure for cancer'. while hicks knew that he lifted material for his live sets, he didn't really mind too much. then the fucker recorded it. amazingly hicks shrugged it off. richard morton has also ripped off the 'i'd like you to meet my wife and sister' gag. that was the point at which i walked out of his set

anyone else notice that leary didn't do another standup vid after hicks died?

I would like to change my answer (can't actually remember who I voted for now) to Daniel Kitson. I saw him last night and he is the funniest stand-up I have ever seen. I'm going to see him again on the 1st of Feb and I may start stalking him in the not too distant future.

I voted for Eddie Izzard.

I went to see sexie at MEN last year, and laughed so hard that every one of my ribs hurt. It's the only time I've laughed that hard. I know sexie isn't one of his best DVDs but was awsome live.

Billy Hicks, and Billy Connolly are also high on the list of favourite comics.

You know it makes sense! I've seen him around half a dozen times and always laughed so much it hurts - when we saw him at the fringe this year he overran by half an hour - bonus!

He's at the Brixton Comedy Club compering until the end of Feb, I think - must get down there but it's on a Sunday and every Sunday I seem to be doing something, like tonight for instance - arggghh!

He's also playing the Hen & Chickens in Islington working on his festival show for this year - I think he's there for the next coupla weeks, and I'll definitely be seeing him perform that at the Fringe.

I think I was in some pain last night, he was the compare for the Just the Tonic Tsunami benefit gig. He did a lot of plate smashing and sweeping - funnier than it sounds. Watching him trying to get Johnny Vegas to draw a raffle was blissful. I thought he was crying at one point, I think Vegas had a nervous breakdown. I'm not sure how long the show was supposed to last, but I'm guessing it overran since it started at 7:30pm and ended about ten past twelve after 3/4 of the (2000 strong) audience had walked out thanks to Vegas' incoherant rambling. It was awesome, like watching a car crash.

Oh and Kitson's adorable too, especially his stutter. I think I'd like to marry him. Something I never thought I'd say about Spencer out of Phoenix Nights, just goes to show you never can tell.
