WOW. That essay is great. It really shows the bond between Ed and Shaun and Shaun's connections with everyone else in the film.

It was a good read, but I thought he emphasised the friendship angle too much at the expense of others. Surely it can be about the romantic relationship between Shaun and Liz and have a lot to say about the nature of friendship.

What a load of balls, i think this guy has read a little too much into it. Dont get me wrong Pegg and Wright did an ace job with the film but i'm sure that there intentions were to make a zombie film that they themselfs would of liked to watch, not complety restructure the 'buddy' movie.
Just chill out Phil and enjoy the movie for what it is, insted of analysing it. |

Really good essay, he has read too much into it but that's what films are for, to be interpreted by people to such an extent that they completely lose sight of the original concept of the film. Good read though.

I thought it was pretty good. While, as two (or more?) have said already. the author may have delved into the mivoe a tad bit more than even I would have expected (and I'm used to a lot of delving too deep into things, what with living with my father) but it was still good.
But, damn, that must have taken a long time to write! |

Hey all, this is my first post here. I'm the author of that particular essay and I came here to promote a link to it...when lo and behold, somebody I don't think I've ever heard of posted it first. Cheers!
Anyway, thanks for reading and for the feedback. A few replies: >Surely it can be about the romantic relationship between Shaun and Liz and have a lot to say about the nature of friendship. Agreed, it could be, but seeing as the film is bookended with examinations of Ed's and Shaun's relationship, and that Ed and Shaun remaining together is the surprise ending, rather than Liz and Shaun which is just the natural flow of things, I'd say friendship is the better angle from which the film can be viewed. Of course, that's just a matter of perspective, and we don't seem to disagree, it's just that one of us thinks one aspect is more important than the other. >What a load of balls, i think this guy has read a little too much into it. Dont get me wrong Pegg and Wright did an ace job with the film but i'm sure that there intentions were to make a zombie film that they themselfs would of liked to watch, not complety restructure the 'buddy' movie. You may want to re-read the essay, as I don't state anywhere that that was their intention. I'm perfectly willing to believe that very little of it was planned that way, but that doesn't change the fact that it's in the film. And I think you are selling Pegg and Wright a bit short if you claim their only intention was to make a zombie film for themselves to enjoy; surely they're far more intelligent and artistic than to limit themselves to that. >Just chill out Phil and enjoy the movie for what it is, insted of analysing it. Oh, trust me, I enjoy the film immensely. If I didn't, an essay would never have crossed my mind! > But, damn, that must have taken a long time to write! If you don't include the time it took to rewatch the film (to get the exact quotes, mainly), about two hours. Not bad, but as a literature major I'm used to pounding out essays in shorttime. Thanks again for all the feedback, and keep it coming. Feel free also to comment on www.phil-reed.com, as the essay is (obviously enough) posted there. |
