Donkey Punch - Amanda Platell calls it the vilest film she's ever seen

What? An opinionated columnist from the Daily Mail doesn't like a violent film? But they have their fingers so firmly on the pulse of modern culture!

The Mail really is a shitty rag isn't it.

Anyway Rory, your review makes me want to see the movie even more than Amanda Platell's holier-than-thou diatribe.

That's hilarious. I love this line:

And we wonder why violent sex acts are on the increase!

You can practically hear the shrillness of it. I'd love to know where she gets her statistics.

Sensible comments ahoy as well.

(some douchebag)

I totally agree. This sort of thing is contributing to the society we live in, glamourising drugs, group sex and the like...to think government money went into funding it!!! Our tax money! How could this happen, there should be an enquiry. It's no wonder the teenagers of today think it is cool and OK to take drugs...all the celebrities are doing it. Bring back some good talented celebrities who are actually talented at some form of art and then we may have some good role models. What hope is there for the kids of today?

Won't someone PLEASE think of the children!!

and since when has lottery money become tax money? Why don't these people even read the article before posting their inane comments.

Fools.

Like Jim Morrison perhaps? Or Jimmy Hendrix? Or James Brown? Or Joe Orton? Or Christopher "he who loves not tobacco and boys is a fool" motherfuckin' Marlowe. Yep, talented artists have always been down on sex and drugs.

The very same. I hadn't actually seen the music video before I saw the film, but it uses actual clips from the film and is a nice homage indeed. I think the video actually appears on the DVD with contributions from Adam Yauch, so clearly there's a passion for Diabolik there...

Once Upon A Time In The West

The ''Greatest Films'' thread has reminded me of a bunch of films I haven't watched in a while so I decided to dust off Sergio Leone's masterpiece and watch it for the first time in over a year. Quite simply, one of the greatest films ever made. Gripping, meditative and poetic, it's a beautifully brutal film about the West, revenge and something about death. Great performances from Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda and Claudia Cardinale but it was Jason Robards who stood out for me this time. Every thing he says is a killer line (''Judas was content with four thousand, nine hundred and seventy less'' ''They didn't have dollars then'' ''No, but sons of bitches? Yeah.'') and he's just fantastic to watch. It's also got one of the best scores ever composed and is just brilliant on every level.

Yeah, Ennio Moriccone really outdid himself on that.

For me, I sat down tonight with Crimson Tide and Death at a Funeral. The former, a taut, tension-fueled thriller with a booming Hans Zimmer score and suitably gruff, tough-as-nails performances by Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. The latter, a by-no-means-perfect but still quite entertaining (if a bit slow to start) farce, with a decent cast (including a naked Alan Tudyk) and plenty of amusing, if predictable, gags.

man on wire - don't look down...

in 1974, philippe petit and a small team of co-conspiritors managed to sneak into the north and south towers of the world trade centre, in new york; they erected a wire, upon which philippe made his way between the twin towers.

the documentary charts this feat, portrayed as if it were a heist, whilst telling the story of the dream philippe had, of accomplishing it, when he saw that construction was beginning on the towers. showing also philippe's wire-walking exploits on the cathedral at notre dame and on the sydney harbour bridge, the documentary paints a portrait of an interesting and inspiring character...

entertaining, interesting, inspiring and beautiful. this is a very enjoyable documentary, inhabited by an interesting bunch of characters, none more so than petit himself. even though i'd never heard of this act, until i saw the trailer for this documentary a few weeks ago, the poster for the film which shows petit's walk between the towers doesn't remove any of the tension or make the viewer any less engaged. as i said, petit is a very interesting character (despite the fact he's also a juggler) and, with a humorous and slightly off-kilter look at life he, along with the others who participated in his walks, make this film eminently watchable.

the walk itself, even though it is mostly shown through photographs, is a thing of extreme beauty, whilst the reactions it evokes are quite amazing.

good stuff...

Die Hard 4

Enjoyed it more this time round but it's still too silly for its own good and the John McClane v's Maggie Q set piece is a little distasteful.
