Well, I really quite enjoyed it. The situations are certainly unoriginal, but I think it certainly carried the Father Ted feel relatively well. After the void of laughter that's Hyperdrive, it was nice to see Ayoade, Morris and Linehan do something actually funny. Most jokes hit the mark (though the slapstick was a bit unnecessary). Regards the laughter, yes, it can be a nuisance sometimes, but in the context of this sitcom, I think its justified. As its in front of a live studio audience, they always laugh more than you may do at home, but, whenever I've been in an audience, you always do anyway as you go with the flow.

Linehan seems to be pulling off a really difficult balancing act here. His intention to make a comedy that has both mainstream appeal and makes the hardcore comedy nerds (you know, those internet forum losers) laugh is not only a tough one but possibly also an important one, what with comedy being quite unpopular here at the moment. Or it's just a cynical attempt to create a saleable sitcom format and grab that US TV money.
Either way I still don't understand how anybody can deny the overall funniness of it. Although I'm with Jessop on O'Dowd, he's not raised one laugh yet. This post has been edited by whitey: Feb 6 2006, 05:16 PM |

When Denholm came down to the IT department to look for the Stress Machine and they hid the fire by putting a frame around it and passing it off as a screensaver, that's what it reminded me of (plus, Richard Ayoade kind of sounds like Brittas). There's nothing wrong with this sort of format, but I, personally, stopped finding it funny a long while back. |
