Well, I really quite enjoyed it. The situations are certainly unoriginal, but I think it certainly carried the Father Ted feel relatively well. After the void of laughter that's Hyperdrive, it was nice to see Ayoade, Morris and Linehan do something actually funny. Most jokes hit the mark (though the slapstick was a bit unnecessary). Regards the laughter, yes, it can be a nuisance sometimes, but in the context of this sitcom, I think its justified. As its in front of a live studio audience, they always laugh more than you may do at home, but, whenever I've been in an audience, you always do anyway as you go with the flow.

In the first two episodes we discovered Jen knows nothing about computers, Denholm loves teams - particularly The A-Team, Moss is dressed by his mother and Roy is a kleptomaniac. Log on next week to find out what happens when Roy and Moss try internet dating and Jen falls in love... Check back next week for episode three - 50/50 They said that last week. Linehan seems to be pulling off a really difficult balancing act here. His intention to make a comedy that has both mainstream appeal and makes the hardcore comedy nerds (you know, those internet forum losers) laugh is not only a tough one but possibly also an important one, what with comedy being quite unpopular here at the moment. Or it's just a cynical attempt to create a saleable sitcom format and grab that US TV money.
Either way I still don't understand how anybody can deny the overall funniness of it. Although I'm with Jessop on O'Dowd, he's not raised one laugh yet. This post has been edited by whitey: Feb 6 2006, 05:16 PM |

I laughed a little bit.
Having said that, I was in a restaurant in Almunecar getting pissed and stuffing my face, so I never saw it... |

QUOTE (whitey @ Feb 6 2006, 04:54 PM) I'll deny it. I didn't think it was awful, but I only laughed once, and it was because Chris Morris was doing a funny voice. There were a few amusing moments, but they weren't enough to make me do more than smile. What people find funny is a matter of opinion, and in the same respect that you can't understand how anyone can deny the overall funniness of this show, I can't understand how anyone could see this as anything more than a slightly unoriginal, mediocre comedy. Also, I can't help but feel that this was some sort of personal quest for Lineham to rally against the newer breed of laugh-track free, 'unconventional' sitcoms. The audienceless, not obviously studio shot sitcom is currently in fashion, so Lineham is going back to basics. Comedy is all cynical and mean now, so Lineham is going to try to be pleasant. There's a lot of bad words on telly now, so The IT Crowd will be (fairly) clean of language. Well great. If it was his intention to ape a 'The Brittas Empire' style of show then he's succeeded. When Denholm came down to the IT department to look for the Stress Machine and they hid the fire by putting a frame around it and passing it off as a screensaver, that's what it reminded me of (plus, Richard Ayoade kind of sounds like Brittas). There's nothing wrong with this sort of format, but I, personally, stopped finding it funny a long while back. |

To everyone who's misspelt it, it's Linehan.
