Rather than inundate the Avatars thread with further reminiscences of grafitti (although it's perhaps a little too late now to really warrant a new thread), I thought I'd start a dedicated thread anyway, for y'all to post your favourite grafitti stories. Grafitti Whoring welcome, where possible!
Anyways, I saw some grafitti scrawled in the grime on the back of a truck at lunchtime today: Cleaned by Stevie Wonder. (the classic derviative being: Also Available In White) Okay, mildly amusing if a little old hat, but the funniest version I've seen would have to be: I Wish My Wife Was This Dirty Well I found it funny. I know they're not brilliant, and I'm quite sure there are far better ones out there. From the simplistic to the ambitious, amusing or serious even, let's have 'em folks! Someone in NY goes around sticking signs to everything saying 'Jesus Saves'. I always want to ask that person if he believes Jesus forgives for sticking up stupid signs everywhere.

For many years in Leeds, at the top of Royal Park Hill (leading up from the Royal Park pub for all you student types out there) was scrawled 'VOTE WITH A BULLET'.
The anarchist who painted this legend decided to prove his credentials by replacing one of the letters with the recognised 'anarchy' symbol, namely the encircled letter 'A'. He chose to replace the 'U' in 'BULLET'. It then read 'VOTE WITH A BALLET'. PIROUETTE TO THE PEOPLE! |

For years when I was a kid, on the way to Brent Cross shopping centre, across one railway bridge we used to drive under, was the immortal "M Khan Is Gay" (or was it Bent), in huge white letters.
Who on earth risked life and limb to paint it? How did they do it? Who was M Khan? Was he gay? It even got a mention in a Baddiel stand-up. This post has been edited by Sostie: Dec 1 2005, 04:16 PM |

There were many occurences of 'GILLIAN KELLY SUCKS COCKS' around Leeds, most notaby on the multi story car park near the Merrion Centre.
She lived on my estate and was about a year older than me. I am unable to confirm wether the rumour was true first hand, but nobody I knew disagreed with it. |

Two from the Rocket subway in Liverpool:
"me and Dom smoke weed everyday" "Emma would shag all Westlife!" They made me smile for some reason. Sefi x |

There's a toilet at my Uni where every week without fail people take it upon themselves to write a political debate on the wall. It has taken in topics such as Iraq, AIDS, The Aluminati and the death penalty. My personal favourite bit of graffiti was one conversation which read
''We are living in a new Third Reich'' ''Wouldn't that be the Fourth Reich, then?'' |

Baddiel couldn't stop mentioning it during The Mary Whitehouse Experience. He used to try and work out roughly how many people had the fact of M Khan bentness impressed on them over the years. It was quite a few. |

Sounds like the whispered narrative from an epic, imaginary 'never released' song by Pulp. * Blasphemy get-out-of-jail-Free clause: this is probably not actually true. |

My personal favorite was in a bathroom stall in a club in the East Village. It has gotten way too "hip" down there and in the bathroom someone drew this monster eating a screaming stick person with the words "I eat Hipsters". Brilliant! I want to go back there and take a picture and put it on a t-shirt.

At the height of the Anti-War in Iraq marches some clever people changed a lot of the 'BUS STOP' markers in the centre of Bristol (you know the sort, BUS STOP written in huge yellow writing on the ground).
With a bit of yellow paint they changed it to 'BUSH, STOP!'. I was very pro-war and right wing before that, but ever since that day I saw those I've been a staunch lefty, firmly in the anti-war camp. This post has been edited by Henry Krinkle: Dec 2 2005, 06:36 PM |
