2006's first versus is between two popular, historically inaccurate, pre-20th century war films.
ZULU Brits (mainly Welsh) defend an outpost against "Zulus...farzands of 'em". Led by a top Hollywood star with a dubious accent. ZU-LOOOOOOOOO BRAVEHEART Scots fight the evil English for independence. Led by a top Hollywood star with a dubious accent. FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM Get voting. I really wanna see those fingers. Either I'm reading both of the options wrong (possible) or they are both awful (probable).

Zulu. I do quite like it but i'd watch nearly anything over Braveheart, apart from maybe the Patriot...

Went for Zulu. Other than the well executed (yet historically laughable) battle scenes, Braveheart is a floppy, untidy, unwashed cock.

Zulu bored me. So did Braveheart. And Mel Gibbon [sic] is a bit of a tosspot.

Zulu, no doubt. I love the "Men of Harlech" scene.

I`ll go with Zulu due my antipathy to Mel Gibson.

I went for Braveheart, purely and simply for the battle scenes which were phenominal.

Braveheart has higher production values, but it's Zulu for me.
I think as an English person I'm not allowed to like Braveheart, am I? It's so anti-english as to defy belief. But that's not the reason I don't like it. It's highly concentrated sentimentalist claptrap IMO, more so than practically every other film. Besides, Michael Caine Kicks Arse. |

QUOTE (DazDaMan @ Jan 3 2006, 06:31 PM) well yes and no. Do you remember that documentary a while ago that said that Rourke's Drift rose to such cultural prominence becuase the British needed some sort of good news story to cover up for a massive defeat they had recently suffered?...so whilst Braveheart is less "factually" accurate, both are products of nationalist myth construction... Personally I like Braveheart more, less morally contentious, and more obviously stupid and enjoyable as a piece of Hollywood history warping crap. I like the way it tries to manipulate your emotions so obviously, like a soapy hand job for your feelings. |

While a lot of people say that Braveheart is anti English, and it is to a certain extent, I can't say that it exactly casts a lot of the Scots in the best light either. The Scots nobles selling out to get themselves a bit more land for instance. And as to the brutality of it, both sides weren't exactly bloodless. We hear of York being 'sacked', and I wouldn't imagine for a minute they just mean that the Scots army will pop down the local boozer and have a quick punch up with a few locals.
