Out of interest what did your friend bring to the table as the best sitcom from the past few years? or did he just say Arrested Development wasn't it and didn't give his own favourite?

Beside Curb Your Enthusiasm and My Name Is Earl I'm struggling to think of any decent American sitcoms from the last couple of years.

QUOTE (monkeyman @ Oct 9 2006, 08:21 PM) Out of interest what did your friend bring to the table as the best sitcom from the past few years? or did he just say Arrested Development wasn't it and didn't give his own favourite? The second argument. He didn't specifiy a better sitcom as being the best but he just kept refuting my claims that Arrested Development was a great show. He mentioned Curb but I pointed out to him that Curb is not a ''sitcom'' in the traditional sense either in terms of acting or writing. This post has been edited by maian: Oct 10 2006, 02:01 PM |

Calling Curb a sitcom is a bit of a stretch, but I was lost for ideas.
Sounds like your chum deserves the very strongest of verbal lashings for such foolery. To say the Arrested Development isn't great is just plain stupid. I've yet to show it to anyone I know and not have them love it, something that has never happened in all my dvd loaning days. The fact that he couldn't come up with anything says it all really. Think I might start over at the begining again and watch season 1 and 2 through in preparation for when season 3 comes out. STEVE HOLT! |

I think the main problem was that he saw an episode or two when they were showing it late at night on the BBC last year. I was fortunate enough to catch the whole of that season and so gradually got all the injokes and everything but he caught one midseason and had no idea what was going on. Unlike most sitcoms it really doesn't pay to come in midseason since there are so many references and in-jokes that you quickly get lost. I'll make him sit down and watch it one day and prove him wrong.
Bloody philosophy students; why can't they do a real degree?* *No offense to any philosophy students here. |

Scrubs is the only other one that comes to mind, though that may be because we don't get all that much over here in terms of little-known sitcoms. There are probably some gems that haven't been seen over here. |

Speaking of recent American sitcoms, I would love it if Fox would release Andy Richter Controls the Universe on DVD one of these days, so I can see whether that deserves its fairly decent reputation or not. It was canceled before I had a chance to see for myself.

Same here; actually, I did catch one episode and I remember one joke had me shrieking with laughter but now I'll be damned if I can remember it. Hrm. |
