About a third of the way into Storm of Swords (book three of A Song of Ice and Fire). I cannot put these books down. I was up until 1.30am reading last night.

I finally read Jonathan Coe's The Closed Circle, choosing to start and finish it in about two days. On my J Coe novel-ranking-o-metre, it's above The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim, but bellow What A Carve Up!. The Rotters' Club remains at the top, fact fans.

I've read just over half of The Hunger Games today. It doesn't sound like a massive achievement (it's nothing compared to how quickly I used to read), but given that I've barely read anything for the past few years because of how appalling my concentration is now, it's pretty good going. I'm enjoying it muchly and wondering if I can persuade my sister to go with me to see the film when it's out. It took me a few hours this morning to finish it. Brilliant stuff! I'll be ordering the rest of the trilogy over the weekend. |

Please tell us your reaction to the forthcoming events. It's been many years since I first read it, but I always like hearing from people who are reading through it for the first time. |

But in spoiler tags, please! They're on my to-read pile next after I've finished the Millennium books. Oh, there is no way I would spoil it for you. It's too fucking good. Chappers - my essential reaction was WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? I could not believe it (I'm talking about what we shall refer to as 'The R.W.'). Although given his precedent for doing similar in earlier books, I knew I shouldn't be surprised. But even so...WHYYYYYYY????????? |

Picked up Kevin Smith's new book, Tough Shit, at the airport on my way home. It's astonishing just how big a dick Bruce Willis is in real life.

I'm a wee bit behind Rachel with A Song of Ice And Fire. About to start Storm Of Swords (well, the paperbacks are in two volumes, so the first one).
I hope Joffrey dies soon, the little shit. This post has been edited by Everlong: Apr 6 2012, 07:26 AM |

I'm now on Book 5 - A Dance with Dragons - and fuck, it got really dark. All the Reek chapters make me both sad and disturbed. |

Finally finished It by Stephen King the other day after slowly working through it over the last six months. Whilst it was genuinely terrifying, and the ending was incredibly touching and bittersweet, it suffered from the basic problem that it is a 1000+ page book about kids fighting a clown. Whilst all the background about Derry was interesting enough, I found every digression took away from the power of It, rather than added to it, and the middle-section of the book dragged noticeably, to the point where I read the first and last 300 pages in about a week, all told, but the middle part was what I struggled with.
Still, there are some indelible images in there and King does a great job of capturing the wonder and terror of childhood. |

Meh. After the way she disappointed me with the last two Potter books, I think I'll have to wait and see what people say about it when it's out before I'll consider reading it.

It sounds like the type of book I would avoid like the plague. |

I kind of hope I am wrong, but I suspect she's going to get a battering from the critics (unless her writing has improved some since she finished the Potter books). It's not that I think she is a bad writer, it's just that she isn't all that special, and the things that made Harry Potter special (the detail in the world she created and the intricate plotting) probably won't translate very well to a standalone novel.
