Interesting fact; 50 Shades of Grey started out as Twilight fan fiction.

It shows.

Ana Steele is a thick virgin who she doesn't know what an e-mail is. Emma is far too classy for this dreck. I don't know how producers can make this book into anything but porn because plotlines about anal sex in exchange for a car are not yet quite mainstream.

It is the Da Vinci Code all over again - meaning, people talk about it now and then in a few years will pretend they never read it. It is so very badly written AND by a woman as these things often are so. People will be very ashamed of the poor grammar and geographical stupidity rather than the light bondage aspect. I take back everything I said about Charlaine Harris as she makes this James person look like Ian McEwan. And Jilly Cooper can do dirty boinking AND can write.

What I don't understand about Fifty Shades of Grey is that it's a genre that has existed for decades (with titles like "Her Master's Sword" and paintings of He-Man on the cover), the only difference is that this one seems to be even shoddier than them, yet people prattle on about it like it's the most original thing to happen to literature in decades. I've not read any, but at least they seemed to have some semblance of plot, thin as it may be. This is just utter and complete garbage, and the fact that I'm 'not the target audience' does not excuse it (like it sort of does with Twilight).
It's just shit. Give me a week and I'd write a book longer and better than it.

Those quotes I posted earlier were from the same two pages that my friend opened it to at random, apparently. If that's the case, how many times does she say "inner goddess"?
Also, the entire concept of the 'inner goddess' (which is not an invention of hers) is so horrifically bile-vomitingly shit. It's basically every woman's inner voice that wants to be sexually dominant, but 'the man' keeps bringing her (and thus all women) down by repressing them. It's not feminism, it's just nonsense.

I'm so mad. I thought we were finally done with all this bullshit now Twilight is over, but now it's been replaced by something even worse. At least Twilight had a story that I could see would be interesting to others, even though I didn't think much to it. The movie wasn't bad at all, it just wasn't very good.

EDIT: Does it mean Emma Watson will be getting her clothes off, though?

I don't know if this theory is correct, or whether it is complete cobblers, but I'd put 50 Shades of Grey's success down to the Kindle (and other eReaders).

People suddenly found they could download and read porn without an embarrassing cover to give the game away and, what the hell, it makes the journey into work a bit more entertaining! SoG just happened to be in the right place at the right time and very successfully exploited a new market. A lot of people started downloading it and that got the interest of Random House et al. It then came out in paperback and word of mouth and hype has taken it from there.

I'm surprised just how well this has sold in print though, because it's just not regular mainstream material. I suspect a lot of people are buying it because of the hype, finding it is bobbins and that this will be the book that charity shops are turning away from the next decade.

More annoying that SoG will be the raft of wanna-be novels that will now get published on its coat tails.

I can see a mainstream film being made, but I suspect it will be significantly toned down - especially if they attract a "name" to the lead role.

You can get better literotica for FREE online. I don't see why people read such dross. You can't get off if it's badly written. I agree about Jilly Cooper. Much better than this shite.

That does sound at least partially responsible.

I wonder how many extra books Jasper Fforde has sold to idiots?

And how confused they are when they read it?
