I played the first episode of Alan Wake over the weekend.

It pleasantly suprised me by not being shit. Actually it's rsther good, creating a very nice and spooky atmosphere. Gameplay is fairly similar to Max Payne in execution, with some interesting uses of the light as a weapon. It doesn have a serious hard-on for Stephen King, in fact he's name checked in the first line of the narration, but that's no bad thing. It uses it's influences well to immerse the player effectively in the story.

The "previously on Alan Wake" bits between episodes are a nice touch too. It's definitely a game which works well with the lights down and the sound up.

I like having my expectations exceeded.

How? What? When? Where?

I thought it wasn't out officially for a few weeks?

Or is this a "Patient Zero"* prequel jobby?

*Dead Rising 2 demo/DLC/Prequel.

Wasn't The Darkness famously rubbish or am I thinking of a completely different game? I've not played it so I don't know either way.

Maybe, I know it got great reviews from the media and sold well.

Sure it had its flaws but they were easy to ignore once The Darkness washed over you. Brilliant fun to be playing as a bad guy for once. And the visceral in your face combat with guns and unearthly super powers was great fun.

Had a great sense of humour too.

I have my methods.

*taps nose*

My methods being go over to my mate's place occasionally and play high illegal copies of not-yet-out xbox360 games.

I think it's out in about a week. Worth picking up from what I've played of it so far.

The Toy Story 3 game looks brilliant, I am basically a child when it comes to computer games but the free play option sounds like fun. I'm not really sure what the PlayStation Move is but I'm hoping you can play it without it.

You can, the PS Move stuff is just additional exclusive (for now) thingies. The toy box mode does sound pretty damn awesome.

I'm hoping my copy of Alan Wake turns up some time this week. I will be getting a free copy but I've already promised to give that away to a friend. I've heard mixed things about it. Someone at work told me they'd seen bad reviews, the ones I saw gave it 8s and 9s out of 10, so we'll see.

I read an in-depth review yesterday that says it is slow and patronising for the first half, and absolutely brilliant for the remainder. I really like the idea of the game but I'll wait for a bit until deciding whether to make a purchase.

It isn't.

Well I didn't think it was. The pace is slowish at the start, but that's good because it amps up the tension effectively. I won't post any big spoilers but towards the end of the first episode there's a fast paced and quite unsettling chase sequence and fight that is quite thrilling. I can forgive it the odd cheesy line, this is the developer who made Max Payne after all.

Yeah that sounds like the one I read, either IGN or Eurogamer I think. I think if I wasn't getting it cheap I'd probably wait till the price came down.

I've been looking forward to Alan Wake for so long, and will probably get it but I'm actually more tempted to grab Red Dead Redemption first.

The developer said that it sold well somewhere or other, enough for a sequel anyway.

I'm not saying everyone liked it but enough did.

I think it's great anyway.

Playing through Lost: Via Domus now.

I like Lost so I expected to like this, wrong. It looks reasonable and the island is beutiful, the production team must have blown the budget on creating said island though. Voice acting is awful, not even using the actors from the show I think.

Only just started but I'm not gripped. They've ballsed up by creating an external character to the show, it instantly makes me not really care.

Lost has the potential for a brilliant game, unfortunately this isn't it.

I was really looking forward to Via Domus.
It was shit. But do stick with it (if you can), there are some cool moments. It's let down by, as you said the voice acting and also the load times between areas, infuriating puzzles and confusing story.
I'm hoping that once the show is over, someone takes the time to make an amazing game where you can explore a full island, free of load times. Perhaps an original story with original characters. You could play as a castaway or an other....Playing an other would be so cool, stealthily infiltrating camps, abducting people on the list...so much scope for an amazing game.
