I didn't see as many films at the cinema as I'd have liked to this year, but I'm catching up on DVD, and I'm hoping to catch several more of my original 'want to see' titles soon, so I will be posting my top ten in the next week or so.

I'm pretty awful at listing things in any kind of preferential order, but movies I saw and liked were: Quantum of Solace, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, C'est longtemps que je t'aime, Burn After Reading and No Country For Old Men.

Films I saw and didn't like were Sweeney Todd and Indy IV.

Still need to track down a few movies I want to see desperately, like Wall-E and Cloverfield.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Not seen that yet, but judging by the trailer it looks pretty funny. Struck me though that they'd nicked the idea from the frankly underrated The Moguls (2005), aka. The Amateurs (starring Jeff Bridges, Ted Danson, Glenne Headly, William Fichtner et al).

I'll almost certainly fail to see a good chunk of stuff before Dec. 31, 11:59 p.m. passes, I've slacked harder and faster than ever this year. laugh.gif

As of right now, WALL-E, Frost/Nixon, The Dark Knight and Iron Man are almost assuredly on the list. The other slots, we'll see how they shake out based on what I see before month's end.

ETA: It's a testament to how good 2007 was yet again that a load of titles I'm seeing on the UK peeps' lists because they opened there in '08 are ones that I'd put on my list again in a heartbeat if I could.

Having watched the second half of it while I was meant to be working today (I caught the first half while I was meant to be working on Friday) I would like to add Changeling as my 10th choice.

Having just watched it, In Bruges would definitely get a space on my top 20 (I can't be arsed with top 10s anymore)

I know, but only because someone else hadn't. I'm really just echoing Roger Ebert at this point.

The LA Film Critics named WALL-E their Best Picture today. Not Best Animated Picture.... Best Picture, full stop.

It's officially a serious contender for the Oscar now. Woot.

Cue some lame live-action/CGI interaction at the ceremony.

I don't think Wall-E should be a surprise at the Oscars. I mean people are still tipping Heath Ledger. Except a Ledger win would be a fucking travesty.

Yeah, I agree there. His Joker turn was impressive and all, but I'm fairly sure he wouldn't even be nominated were he still alive.

I disagree. There was some definite Oscar talk before his death and I think he would have got a nod for it. Probably wouldn't have won, then again I'm struggling to think of a performance in another film this year that really stands out as much as his does.

Fair enough sir! smile.gif

Getting back to the principal topic just for a sec, while I certainly haven't seen enough films this year to qualify a Top 20, my Top Ten heavyweights are (in alphabetical order for the time being) currently weighing in thusly:

- The Bank Job
- Be Kind Rewind
- Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
- Charlie Wilson's War
- Cloverfield
- In Bruges
- Iron Man
- Man on Wire
- There Will Be Blood
- WALL·E

'Also rans', in preferential order:

- The Good Night (so very nearly edging a tenth place spot, but in favour of what I really couldn't decide)
- The Dark Knight
- Quantum Of Solace
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull*

* 'Also walked'. Doesn't really belong in my list.

I'm hoping to catch up on another half a dozen by year end, not least of all Burn After Reading, No Country For Old Men, Tropic Thunder and Happy-Go-Lucky, so this may well change.
