So, we're into the last two months of the year, Oscar contenders are starting to surface and the weather's taken a turn for the worse. What better time to look back wistfully on the year and create arbitrary lists saying that wildly different films are somehow better or worse than each other?

I personally won't be posting my list until just before Christmas, once Where The Wild Things Are is released and once I can see A Serious Man for free, basically, but I thought I'd create the thread in order to generate discussion and to give people time to ruminate and ponder.

Let The Right One In would be my top film I think but seeing as I put it at number one last year I'll leave off my ten.

In no real order...

TIMECRIMES
This Spanish time travel film was a wonderful surprise. Funny, tense, inventive, and when you sit and think about it, a total mind-fuck. This year was a fantastic one for science fiction - Watchmen, Star Trek, Pontypool, District 9, Moon.

IN THE LOOP

Apart from generally being great and featuring Tom Hollander, this is also the best sweary movie since Midnight Run

UP!

There's this old guy right, he's mourning the loss of his wife, he's waiting for death, he attaches balloons to his house, drags it around South America, meets talking dogs and battles a pensionable nut job. What the fuck were they thinking! Pixar films range from good to great. This is without a doubt one of the greatest.

CRANK 2
It's not nearly as good as the first film. It could never be. This is far more mental, un-pc and generally wrong. But, c'mon...Bai Ling is mental, Russ Meyer-esque sex scenes make a return, it stars The Stath and has one of the lines of the year. "Where's my fucking pumper?" It's an easy film to love (or hate)

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

I'm an easily manipulated sap that likes a good blub.

LAND OF THE LOST

A critical and financial flop. What do critics and the public know? I loved every stupid second of it.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
Forget The Basterds. The real stars are Mélanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz. More than twice as much dialogue as Death Proof, mainly subtitled, yet several times more engrossing.

ZOMBIELAND
Zombie comedy film of the year (Doghouse & Dead Snow were worthy contenders for the crown) featuring the cameo of the year

WATCHMEN
So much better than anyone could have hoped for. I bet even Alan Moore secretly loves it.

Can't pick a tenth. It's possibly one of the SF or zombie films mentioned above. Or maybe Last Chance Harvey, Adventureland, Hurt Locker or Gran Torino
