Ok, I don't think many people frequent this board any more, but I thought I'd just put this up here anyway. On the subtitle track that points out all the references, the white "painting" titled "fifth elephant" had a subtitle that referenced the film the fifth element. I thought it made sense at the time, but that was before I'd started reading Discworld. Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant was published in the same year Series One aired and the Simon/Jessica seem like the types to enjoy Pratchett.

Or am I just grasping at straws?

I think you are grasping at straws, I don't believe it is a nod to the Pratchett book.

It's a long time since I last listened to it, but I think the commentary makes some reference to it.

Yeah you're right. I seem to remember that they say in the commentary they had the idea at roughly the same time as the Pratchett book was written but that they did not "borrow" it from him, nor him from them.
