If you like those, I recommend this book, which is full of photos like that, along with production diaries and personal captions for them.

It also shows how a surprising amount of the prequel trilogy is physical effects, a whole lot more than you might think. IV-VI are the main focus though, mainly because the I-III DVDs include making-of features and so on.

Has anyone ever seen Star Wars: Revisited?

It's a remastered version made by one man over the process of a few years, and it puts the Lucasfilm versions to shame in many respects. The picture is crisper, the colour balance is better, the sound is mixed better (I heard lines I had no idea were in the movie, from the background). All the engine glows, lightsabers, blaster bolts and so on have been re-done to look clearer, better match the correct colour (Luke's saber is blue), and also the blaster bolts better match the locations fr the squib explosions. He's also made some changes, mostly little ones that add to it a little.

For example, when the Rebel Blockade Runner gets hit by the blast and explodes (shutting down the main reactor, as 3PO comments), the engine glow disappears. The alarm sirens also continue right until the ship is docked with the star destroyer, at which point they fizzle out when the clanging sounds of the boading party begin, like they shut it down. The escape pod rotates as it launches, to match how it rotates in the next shot, and you also can see it start to burn up as it enters the atmosphere. It's all very subtle and works very well, I think.

Oh, and he also removes stuff like Greedo shooting first, the Jabba scene, the CGI critters in Mos Eisley and so on. It's a remaster more focused on making the picture better than adding stuff.

It's widely available online, as a file you download and burn to a blank DVD, and it can then be watched on TV.

This other clip shows some of the bigger changes made. Watch once they go into space, there are several new things.


Here is a comparison clip from his work on The Empire Strikes Back. During the Imperial fleet scene, look at not only the difference in colour but also how much brighter the star destroyers engines are (they don't look like bulbs), and that the interior of the star destroyer isn't blue.

I will add that I only really watched it as a curiosity. It's a shame some of these techniques weren't used in the remastering by Lucas, seeing as making the picture better and removing wires and so on is usually what 'remastering' means, but the official cut will always be my choice. As a side note, he also removed the transparency of the snow speeder's cockpit, which Lucas said was 'impossible' to do.
