Because the people answering the survey would have him confused as well, and thought "Alan Bennett is a shit stand-up", because he isn't one. There would have been lots of lesser known stand-ups in the poll (I presume), who wouldn't have made it onto either list. So essentially it is that Alan Bennett, because people would have been thinking of him rather than the relatively unknown comedian, but it's a bit unfair as it's like naming Alan Carr's autobiography the least successful method for giving up smoking.
People must have been voting for their least favourite, there's no way Harry Hill and Russell Brand would have recieved an 'indifferent' amount of votes. |

Yes I know, but he's hardly known as a comedian. If it is that Alan Bennett, he's a bizarre inclusion. It'd be like including Patrick Marber.

I have a feeling the voters may have had to chose from an already decided shortlist, and perhaps the whole thing is some kind of market research survey.
Also those that compiled the list probably have never seen much stand-up and spend their time in front of the TV watching mainly chat shows and panel/comedy quiz shows |
