Part of me can't help but think that this is sabre rattling from both sides - New Line applies pressure on Jackson (and his law suit) by saying he's out, Jackson retaliates by getting the fans worked up into a froth . . .

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Given how much Wingnut and WETA have already done however (design wise for the LoTR trilogy), and given how well they and Jackson know the subject, they are surely better positioned to bring the film in for a smaller out lay - anyone else taking this on is going to have to start from scratch and that's surely going to cost New Line more.

Well...they do have every right to be upset. I was looking forward to seeing WETA's version of Smaug myself.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Jackson doing this!

I don't see another director having a ghost's chance in hell of pulling this off!

I understand Paul WS Anderson's going to give it a go. After all, it was a game on the Commodore 64...

The other, slightly nicer, rumour is that Sam Raimi is in the running to direct.

I hope not. He needs to get on with Evil Dead 4 and give the big blockbusters a rest.

No, but I can hope and pray and maybe, if I say it enough times, it'll happen.

He's not directing Evil Dead 4 just writing the script. Actually I've just noticed that it's been removed from the IMDB. I doubt we'll ever see it, which is probably a good thing.

EDIT I found it again. 2008 they claim. Hmmm.

Of course, by "rumour" you can actually read "geeky fanwank wishlist director". At the moment I'm probably just as likely a choice.
