The Unfinished Tales were great, and apparently lots of stuff has been taken from that, so that gives me hope, but Peter Jackson says the appendices will also be mined a lot. I've read the appendices, and like most appendices, they're pretty boring.

Boring to read as an appendice maybe but seeing it played out in screen could be great.
This is fine by more. The more the better, as long as its actually drawn from the written works and not talk made up guff |

I've read the appendices, and like most appendices, they're pretty boring. ^ I found the ones at the end of LotR quite interesting, though I did stop reading them when they started to go into detail about the Hobbit calendar. The background stories for Aragorn and Arwen are quite good, as is the section about Sam and what happened to him after Frodo left. There is a huge amount of material they can mine here but I would question how interesting it is going to be on screen and does it actually add anything to the central Hobbit story? |

This is what worries me. The Hobbit is a simple but engaging tale, and I don't want it to be lost in a sea of endless "Meanwhile, Gandalf did this..." and "Did you know Hobbit wine is...". There's a reason those aren't in the story.
But we all know the real reason it's a trilogy: Why charge people twice, when you can charge them three times? |

But we all know the real reason it's a trilogy: Why charge people twice, when you can charge them three times? To be fair to Jackson I don't think this is about the money (it may be why the studio green-lit a third film, but I doubt that is Jackson's motivation). I think he is genuinely trying to tell the story to the best of his ability and that he thinks the best way to do that is to have three films. My concern is that he is letting his love of the material drive him to show more when less may be a better option. I guess we will know the answer in December 2014. |

^ That it does. It looks as though they are putting a little more emphasis on the non-Hobbit elements of the story in this trailer, I wonder if that is a reaction to all the people wondering how they are going to pad out a single novel into three films?

Did anyone else think that Martin Freeman delivered the 'fair enough' line very much like Tim from The Office?

Martin Freeman delivers pretty much every line he speaks like Tim from the Office.
