In the commentaries they said that it was attached to his head, and that doesn't affect him. Though they did say it in the context of a ''It's a cartoon, get over it'' discussion.

It's to do with the way Fox aired the show, which is explained briefly in the article. Fox messed around with the scheduling so that the seasons were kind of split oddly and there were huge gaps between when they were aired, s o even though 4 were made there were '5' seasons that were shown on TV.

If you listen to the commentaries on the DVDs they make references to the air dates of each episode and what "season" Fox labeled them with - rest assured though, they've only make four seasons.
