Just wondering if anyone is, if not in attendance, enjoying some of the very fine BBC coverage of this years Glastonbury festival. I watched an awful lot of it last year, appreciating both the fine music and excellent presenting - sadly John Peel is no longer with us but I think Phil Jupitus is picking up the slack this year rather well. BBC2 and BBC3 are running either live or highlight coverage with presenters Jo Whiley/Phil Jupitus or Colin and Edith respectively.

Last night I watched the Killers set which I found to be rather good, although I have always enjoyed them live. I recorded most of the BBC3 coverage last night and early this morning and plan to watch it this afternoon - time permitting.

This thread is for comments (positive or negative) and links - last year I remember there were a lot of sites that had the full sets of "Lost Prophets" etc that I wanted to see but couldn't on the BBC.

First Glasto with digital coverage for me, and it's great, apart from the Peel sized hole.

Bloc Party & Doves looked good, and Norman Cook's set looked enjoyable.

Nice to see the Peel Stage though.

Have so far only seen

WHITE STRIPES - who were great for one reason. Meg White. I swear I would pay just to watch her drum on her own on stage

KAISER CHIEFS (now) - they get a lot of stick but I like their music and and the front man is great to watch (all a bit Blur though)

I liked Colin Murrays comment about the lead singer of the White Stripes staying at his make-up arists house - "Now that's Rock and Roll!"
Lazlo Woodbine
I've seen Doves, Royksopp and The Killers so far and loved all three. I almost wouldn't have minded sleeping in 3 feet of water to be there.
I have to agree the digital service is great. It's usually really annoying when they only play a couple of songs of the band you love before switching to some crap like Franz Ferdinand.
Who's on tonight does anyone know?
Ingram
On the Pyramid Stage:

Keane
New Order
Coldplay

Those are the last 3 acts with Coldplay headlining.

Saw highlights of the Doves last night. fried gold right there! smile.gif

Thanks. Hmm, how about the Other Stage then?
I may watch a little to see how New Order sound these days.

I've been really enjoying it so far, but I do every year anyway. Having watched it on TV (never actually made it there myself sadly) for the last ten years I'd have to say Kaiser Chiefs are one of the best Glastonbury performances I've ever seen. Considering it was their first Glastonbury and they haven't been around that long they took the stage as their own and blew it apart. I predict a...headline spot for next year.

Just to see if I'm completely alone in this - as I suspect I may be - but every year when they go to an act in the dance tent, does anyone else switch the lights off and bounce around the room as the sound and strobe lights from the TV kicks off the bare walls?

Yep...just as I thought. But could I recommend you do? Firstly it's a great way to spend the evening and secondly...I don't want to be the only one anymore. tongue.gif

Rufus Wainwright's on tomorrow! Hurray!

I hope he doesn't get muddy, he's very dapper you know.

Let's hope he doesn't strip.

The two headliners, I only mentioned one, are Razorlight and Coldplay. Those will probably get the most coverage, but Coldplay are on the Pyramid stage so hopefully their set will be quite long.
Lazlo Woodbine
No one i have to see but i may take a look.

Rufus tomorrow should be good though. smile.gif

God help him if the plebs decide to throw mud.

I've decided I'm going to 'do' Glastonbury like this every year. I had a ball watching it last night in my warm living room with a glass (or four) of chilled rosé, smugly laughing at all the idiots in their plastic ponchos getting trenchfoot in 3 foot of water.

Seriously, what's the point of actually going there these days when there's wall-to-wall coverage on space telly?

"Getting toasted, nice and toasted."
Stella MM
I can get toasted in my own living room and I don't have to worry about having an acid freak-out in a swamp triggered by flashing lights and the smell of a hippy's dreadlocks*.

My pal Alyssa is there and making me jealous with her text messages. There's plenty of other stuff besides getting to see some fantastic bands live (which lets face it is always going to be better than watching them on TV). Her favourite is the casino - where I have no doubt she'll be tonight in a formal dress and wellies.

I tell you what else you won't get in your living room that would piss me off at every Glastonbury I went to...some fucker who earlier that morning had learnt to juggle and always decides to practice his/her new found hand/eye co-ordination skills in front of you no matter where you go, all the while they are thinking "hey I'm good at this, I might quit my job in the bank and do it for a living". I swear, I woke up one morning and there was a juggler in front of my tent. They are the festival equivalent of "humourous" mobile ringtones - they will be shared with everyone around you, but enjoyed only by the person doing it. Fuckers. That's it, I'm changing the message under my avatar.

Jesus, what set me off there.
Philz
Im enjoying my Glastonbury sofa weekend very much!....I think Im getting old but the mud and collapsing portaloos made me feel so much better about not getting round to actually buying a ticket.....

Did anyone see Rufus and Martha do the acoustic song? Perfect for an early Sunday evening.

Who was that on after them? I really liked him but didn't catch the name.

I'm good thanks and hope you are too. Looking it in your picture whores post.

Thanks, i'll try and listen out for more of him.

Oh poo, I missed them - and all for an abortive attempt to see Batman Begins. I'm going to stop leaving the house, it's too much bloody hassle.
Baz
You missed Brian Wilson, who was on top form performing some old Beach Boys stuff.
fear_of_pop
James Blunt was on after them Lazlo.

I hate Primal fucking Scream. Why did they have to interrupt Rufus with his flipping top off to show those old cunts?

ohmy.gif
Stella MM
And why did they ask Rufus to put his top back on and then allow Primal Scream to say the word "fuck" before the watershed? Pah. I take it all back - BBC3's coverage is no way to experience Glasto.

most overrated band ever. apart from U2. and the chilli peppers.

Yey someone else who hates U2.

God i hate them so

I thought everybody hated U2.
But not as much as I hate Phil Jupitus.

Was I the only one watching the festival highlights montage at the end of the BBC2 coverage and have a tear roll down their cheek?

It was beautiful. smile.gif

Enjoyed the coverage except for Hooky from New Order prancing about with his stupid long blonde dyed hair and his "rocking out" on bass.

It's a bass, not your cock.

Me, me, I saw them! That's the first I've heard either do and I now want to buy their things. I didn't like James Blunt though. I've shat better whistles than that song.

Dang - wrong thread. Need more coffee.

Heh I was there at the front being insulted by Bobby Gillespie, I do like Primal scream but his attitude fucking sucked and he was out of it, I have to say that I won't ever be going to see them again. They weren't good live and they were not in the glasto spirit. But oh my God Shirley Manson was amazing I was at the front loving every minuite of her performance. Did anyone see my fried Gold flag?? It was day glo yellow in fact Mr Jon79 made it when we went to the isle of wight! Other Highlights for me, Ash, Dresden dolls, blackbud, Killers, and Undertones kicking off the pyramid stage after the terrible floods, warm cider on saturday when it was cold, the fab food up by greenfields, and the perfect weather yesterday! Driving my car thro a bog was quite fun too! Now I have to srape the mud from my wellies and take my car to the car wash!

Thems fightin' words - Hooky am a God!

I remember an NME review back in the 80's referring to him 'wanking' his bass, it's just his style.
Ingram
I managed to watch:

The Killers
The White Stripes
Coldplay
Brian Wilson
Kaiser Chiefs
Fat Boy Slim
The Bravery

To name but a few, and I also got to enjoy the Rufus/Martha acoustic number. I never realised he was that good, until then I had only heard his Jeff Buckley cover of "Hallelujah". I will have to listen out in the future.
fear_of_pop
The TV coverage was a bit rubbish. Hundreds of bands playing, but they just chose to show Brian Wilson and various Northern indie monkeys from the olden days, over and over again.
But I suppose if I'm that bothered I should actually make the effort and go in the flesh.

No offence to his musical prowess back in da day, I just through he smacked a bit of a bloke going through a mid-life crisis and trying to prove to lovely ladies he could move about and grow his hair long.
maian
Hooky rules, I was right at the front for New Order and I loved every second of it. Hooky was quite cool from where I was standing, as was one of the Security guys who was singing along to their whole set and had to restrain himself from a) looking at the stage and b) dancing along with he rest of us.

I have returned, it was wet and muddy but my shoes were waterproof (which did little good when I came across mud up to my ankles/knees) and my tent was on a hill (which was one of the best decisions I ever made)

Highlights: Coldplay, regardless of their many detractors (of which this forum has a few) make music made for festivals and communal singalongs and they played the best set of the weekend (at least, out of the ones I saw). Apart from them, The Killers, New Order and The White Stripes were my other favourites.

Babyshambles were my biggest disappointment, I was hoping for something truly exceptional but they came on late, finished early and didn't do anything to sell the songs. Middling to average.

My favourite memory of the rain and mud was seeing Willy Mason at the Guardian Tent, I couldn't get in but I and some other fans found zips at the side which allowed us to look in without security moving us.

Bloody good weekend all and all, I just wish NO had played Blue Monday...

Of course you meant his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" wink.gif . I enjoyed what I saw of Rufus at Glastonbury...quite looking forward to seeing him in Hyde Park on Wednesday (if I'm not dragged to see Keane

With their track record you expected them to be anything else? Been about 6 times to Glastonbury, but wasn't bothered about going this year...until it arrived, and was on TV. Damn jealous.

Were there still loads of irritating jugglers there?
fear_of_pop
Every time I've seen babyshambles play (only on TV mind) I haven't really liked it, but I love their music on record. Maybe it'd be better in the flesh, I dunno. Or I've always caught them on an off day.

They did in Hyde Park on Friday - I think you got 'World in Motion' instead.

The Hyde Park setlist was:

Krafty
Waiting For The Sirens Call
Crystal
Run Wild
Bizarre Love Triangle
Love Vigilantes
Temptation
True Faith
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Atmosphere
Transmission
She's Lost Control
Regret
Jetstream
Blue Monday

Not in that order though - it's just the order I remembered them in.
maian
That's a pretty similar setlist, Glasto was shorter but some of the songs were the same. Personally I'd have preferred Blue Monday to World In Motion, good as that song is Blue Monday is just special

I'm sorry but you bunch of f*ckin pussies don't see a good act when you see one. Primal Scream f*cking kicked Glastonbury ass. I can't believe the soft bastards that felt offended by Bobby Gillespie and had to leave. I thought he was hilarious and was nothing but pure rock n roll.
