A lot of you have been waiting for this...
American company Bif Bang Pow! have unvieled a line of official Spaced action figures at this year's San Diego Comic Con. From the preliminary 2-D sketches, they're looking great.
This announcement is the culmination of many months of work by founder Jason Lenzi, a Spaced fan who, as he says, doing this because he wants a set for himself!
The first set of figures, Tim and Daisy, are scheduled to be in stores in Spring, 2006. “My intention is to make urban vinyl-styled figures of all the characters, each with a character-specific accessory,” said Lenzi. “Tim will come with his skateboard, Daisy will come with Colin the dog, and so on. The possibilities are endless, not just for the core characters and guest stars, but for episode specific variants as well.”

I've just worked out - your username reads "My Dog Ate L.A.", not as I'd been reading it up until now, as "My Dogatela", like Nutella, or something.

Hello everyone-
I'm the Jason Lenzi of Bif Bang Pow!, and I thought it'd be a good idea to get on the forum and see about getting some feedback for the action figures.
The designs you're seeing will be changed quite a bit before production, we just wanted to have something visual to go along with the announcement. However, the basic look will be the same, and I want to get them as accurate as possible. The cast are going to have input, and the fans should too.
Any suggestions? Questions??

I like the idea of Spaced figures even though I won't let myself spend my money on toys any more. I got a bit addicted. Honestly? 'Urban Vinyl' is so four years ago. I'd rather see something with a caricatured likeness and some smart detailing along the lines of Mezco's Scarface figures (which are real nice). That style lends itself well to capturing the spirit of the characters as opposed to, say the McFarlane method where an attempt at a realistic likeness of Chris Walken comes off the production line looking more like Steve Buscemi. You know what I mean?
At the end of the day though my toy-buying decisions were always down to the licence first and foremost and you've picked a good 'un.
The clothes you've picked for the concept art there are pretty bland, especially Daisy's. That could be anybody.

They need actual expressions rather than characterless inoffensive smiles and blank stares. It's amazing how many toy companies mess that up. Compare Playmates'

re-release Homer. No contest.

Wow. Fantastic. Great to see so much feedback already.
To give some background and address a few things right away....
I first put this 'plan' in motion almost a year ago, to set up a toy company and go after licenses, properties I think are cool, Spaced being the first. My initial contact with anyone connected to Spaced was around October of '04. Long story short, the go ahead to make the announcement at Comic Con was given last Thursday, I left for San Diego on Friday.
So, there was a period a while back where I had to hope for the best and assume I'd get a 'yes', and to plow through with designs, promotional materials, etc. All of which cost a bit, but nothing too crazy. When you get into prototypes, that's another story. Then a bit more substantial sums of money start to change hands. So without a firm commitment, I had to stick with the 2-D designs, and have something to present.
Now, as all of you know, the series isn't available on DVD over here, so I've converted several episodes to hand off to interested parties here that are working in tandem with me, including a very talented young man named Ching Lau who's doing the actual drawings (you should see his details/portraits of Daisy, wow). So in addition to some photos of the cast, he really has only had those episodes and my direction to go off of, and we've only been able to sit down together once in the past several months, due to both of our schedules. It was important to me, however, to make an announcement at Comic Con and get the ball rolling.
So I want to stress again, bear with me. What you're seeing so far is early days. These are going to be super fucking cool, and they're going to make just about everyone happy. Remember, I'm a fan as well, I don't want them to be shit.
Two other points. I didn't want to put anything too specific on any shirts just yet, for two reasons: any clearance issues that may come up with logos and such, and I wanted to get feedback from the cast and you lot before we locked anything in.
Secondly, the urban vinyl thing. Contrary to Whitey's opinion, it's actually still extremely popular, with new companies and product popping up all the time. It appeals to toy collectors, and especially non toy collectors who would normally be slightly embarrassed to buy such things. And, it's actually fairly cost effective. When you get into multi articulated figs (which would be great), every piece brings the cost up a bit. These will have about five points of articulation. But Whitey, I'm with you on the Mezco types figs. Believe me, if the other properties I want work out, that's exactly what I want to do. Spaced included down the road, if it flies.
Sorry that's so long winded, hope it helps. Keep the feedback coming!
Best to you all.

yeah I would agree that the figures need to be more identifiable, they only vaguely look like tim and daisy, and i would prefer them a lot less 'cartoony' and more 'characateurish' ie. why not have tim with his trademark beany? and he's always frowning when relaxed so he needs to look a lot less chirpy i reckon.
Daisy's face is good but again it just seems to be a bland expression, i think if she had a bit more of an over excited expression it would probably be more suited, and she had a couple of tops that are so iconic, i think having just plain tops would be a bit crap really.
I would make them a little more 'macfarlane' like and a bit more rough around the edges as well really, you find these smooth looking toys all over the place these days and they just look a bit childish and crap.
you got to remember that the only people who are gonna buy these are people like myself who are going to want to see attention to detail on these characters that we all know and love?
sorry if that sounds harsh but i'm just trying to create positive constructive criticism.

Man, you guys are fast!
Points taken. But remember, I'm hoping that the people that buy these aren't only the fans. I know that everyone involved with the show wishes it could get released on DVD here in the states, the fans especially. EVERYONE who talked to me at the con asked when the hell that was going to happen. So if the figures work, it could bode well for that, and a ton of people here who's only exposure to Pegg and the gang is Shaun, would finally get to see what all the fuss was about.
And Frostitute, hang in there. Big plans for Mike.
