helooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this astoundingly funny man. He's good friends with Dave Gorman and i believe it was he who dared him to find a Dave Gorman for every card in a deck hence the brilliant "Are You Dave Gorman?" and he has written two books, Join Me, where he accidentaly starts a cult worshipping himself which was a brilliant read and was genuinely funny. And Yes Man which i havent read yet but sounds promising, according to the cover he says yes... ALOT.
so anyone else heard of him/them/dog?

Not only have I heard of him I wrote to him once and he replied with a lovely little note. I also once passed him on Oxford Street - though I was on a 25 and he was on the pavement passing Waterstones. I've also passed Dave Gorman on Regents Street but I was too shy to say hello.

I saw an advert for something that was being shown on TV or satellite recently that he was supposed to be presenting, but I've forgotten what it was, and I've probaby missed it now.

I wrote a letter to him and Dave saying how much I enjoyed the
Are You Dave Gorman? book and the show. He wrote back,
'Thanks for the ace letter! I'm really glad you enjoyed the book and TV show. I also hope you het to meet that Tammy girl soon, and beer is to hand when you do*. Again, thanks for the letter. Danny X'.
I haven't actually got round to reading the other books from either Danny or Dave as I haven't really read ANYTHING lately. I think it's been a good 2-3 years since I read a book, though this may stir me to pick up

* In AYDG? Danny points out, very astutely, that all girls called Tammy deserve beer to be poured over them. In my letter I mentioned that I once had a good friend at school called Tammy who turned into a bitch, joined the bitchy girl group in our year, throwing away our friendship and generally turned into a not very nice person.

In my experience, if Danny Wallace asks you anything, it is so he can write a book about it. Tried the Join Me thing but soon worked out it was a 'give me something to write about' exercise.

Ah, that'd be a programme about conspiracy theories being shown on Sky One. That's all I know I'm afraid.

I've just read The Yes Man, and though I enjoyed it, I find his (and Dave Gorman's, come to that) relentless chirpy optimism and faux-naivity faintly irritating.

I'm probably going to read the Yes Man as I like the style of writing yer man Wallace uses, in that he's seemingly not the most amusing person who's ever lived, but he doesn't pretend to be and gets along by being optimistic and a little bit charming.
On the other hand, he's a bit infuriating because if I had the knackers to do something daft and write a book about it, I would probably write in exactly the same kind of style.
But funnier, obviously.

It is a funny book - plenty of giggles and a few big guffaw moments - and it's lovely and uplifting and all that guff but it's almost exactly the same, structurewise, as the Dave Gorman books and Wallace's previous stuff.

That's good to hear, but I agree with you on the structure point. I started to find that after I'd read two of their books, so I was hoping for a bit of a change for the Yes Man. That said, I'll still read the thing, probably enjoy it and imagine what a spiffing time I'd have if I met him in the pub.

Accidentally? Well-constructed and contrived I'd call it. Also got asked to "join him" but also couldn't be bothered. Would it be cynical of me to suggest he's cashing in on Gorman's success? Probably... I guess he did loads of this sort of thing before

If you've read 'Join Me' you may remember a group of Geordie lads who reaffirm Danny's faith in the project whilst on holiday - well that's my pal Patrick, there's a couple of pictures of him in the book.
To be honest that's the only reason I bought it (I was ordered to), it was an alright read. Sort of like an extended Sunday supplement article (and taking about the same time to read).
I did feel incredibly sorry for his girlfriend though, why you'd risk your relationship for such a silly thing I have no idea.

I really enjoyed Join Me and am a great fan of both DW and DG (more DG but that's because I've read more of his stuff) ever since the Dave Gorman Collection was shown on TV a few years ago.
I've never got round to joining Join Me but once of my housemates has and his picture is on the inside of the really early versions of 'Join Me', which is really cool.

But who else would and set up their own country!

But he's very funny and also very engaging in the way he can present an item, but with his books you're on his side in the way he writes them, plus he does things which make for interesting situations like 'What ifs...' etc...

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Join Me', even if it was a little contrived - it's still a damn good, well told story. A little contrivance here and there just helps make a good story that bit better, I think. It's called artistic licence. I took the book on holiday last year, and it had me grinning like a twat on the return journey when I finally deigned to start reading it. I'd already been introduced to Dave Gorman via 'Better World' and later the 'Are You Dave Gorman?' book, and the general daftness surrounding these strange quests are just the kind of thing that hit me where I live. But 'Join Me', once it found a purpose, had a such a fantastic end result that, contrivance or not, I couldn't help but be won over by the whole story.
And I'd forgotten that 'The Yes Man' was already published - cheers for the heads-up, peeps.

Someone at uni was one of the first people to join Join Me and he's one of the photos in the book. I've enjoyed most things of Danny Wallace's I've come across and I'm a big Dave Gorman fan.
