So... what do you think is the best use of a song in a movie... other than "Don't Stop Me Now" in SOTD, which I think we will all agree is the greatest!!!!

In Dreams by Roy Orbison, creapily mimed by Dean Stockwell in Blue Velvet.

Love Me (or Love Me Tender) by Nic Cage in Wild At Heart

Or that Ami Mann song in Magnolia (can't remember the title)

Rockaway Beach by The Ramones in Royal Tennenbaums
m0r1arty
Don't stop me now, just wants you to start whacking someone about with a pool cue doesn't it? I agree thats the best use of music in a scene.

But for my second place, I'd have to say Waynes World 2, Wayne is off to stop Cassandra from Marrying Christopher Walken and the tune in the car starts off Mrs Robinson (Simon and Garfunkel version) then he passes under a tunnel (where the music goes quite,as if on an AM radio) and when he comes out thew other head it's the Lemonheads version. Good scene IMO

Svein
You're right... That's outstanding...

Or Wayne's World (original) and Bo Rap...

Also used in Pretty In Pink and (albeit a cover version by Dream Academy) in Ferris Beuller. I think the Muse cover is in another film as well.

One of the best songs ever.
Svein
Good call...

Hell, most of that movie has amazing use of songs...

Although Reservior Dogs had the best use with "Stuck In the Middle With You"!
ronlogan1977
The steadicam shot with Tears for Fears in Donnie Darko is amazing.

spacegurl

Wise Up In Magnolia takes some beating, I also love the use of Perfect Day in Trainspotting and Jack Black's version of Let's Get It On in High Fidelity. Oh and as mentioned before elsewhere Live and Let Die In Grosse Pointe Blank!

Edited because I can't type.
Jessopjessopjessop
Some sweet choices there guys - especially Goodfellas and Donnie Darko.

I must give special mention to 'Under Pressure' in Grosse Pointe Blank and 'Canned Heat' in Napoleon Dynamite.
Jinx
The scene in The Crow when Eric Draven puts on his make-up and boots for a night on the town filled with killing people. He stands in the shattered window and lightning illuinates his ghoulish features to 'Burn' By The Cure. That looked pretty cool.

Injektilo
Jumpin' Jack Flash at the end of Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas left me with a smile.
Omniscia
I'll throw my support behind the aforementioned "Layla" in Goodfellas, and "Ride of the Valkyries" in Apocalypse Now, and also prop up Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," appearing to great effect in Oliver Stone's Platoon. Also, "Stand By Your Man" as performed in The Blues Brothers, at Bob's Country Bunker.

Nothing calms down those rednecks like Tammy Wynette.
Ronin
I don't know if anyone here has seen the Indie comedy film "Shades of Gray" but the movie uses the song "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners twice to great comedic effect.
Starscream`s Ghost
Not to forget good use of "Hallelujah" in Shrek. And no, I`m not being funny.
Blind I/O
The large number at the end of Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi
Starscream`s Ghost
Ooooo, and of course, the "Bad Medicine" section of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Shannon Elizabeth, mmmmmmm.

ronlogan1977
How about Axel F in Beverley Hills Cop. Or does that not count cos its the theme tune.
If not, the Star Wars theme tune in Ferris Buellers day off.

You mean "The Sound of Silence"?

And how could I forget "The Blue Danube Waltz" in 2001: A Space Odyssey (or any of the other Strauss used therein, for that matter)?
cueballthedog

blackcherry
I don't know why, but I really love 'Tracks of my Tears' in Platoon.

or Dumb & Dumber
Zoe
Both in 1994, so we're going to have to get fairly anal about release dates in order to decide who actually used the song first.

Or we could not.
