I've never seen it, and I was moaned at by a co-worker for it.
Any good?

In a word. Yes. It's got Tim Robbins in it what more do you want?

Also had Morgan Freeman in it. Another reason to watch, I suppose.

i didn't really like it. it's also one of those films that has a soundtrack that's the musical equivalent of canned laughter...

Emotionally manipulative yes, but it's still good.
I'm not the world's biggest Morgan Freeman fan and the way everyone bangs on about his quiet dignity pisses me off a bit. The man got lucky, he's good at what he does but incredibly limited and, for me, dull.
Tim Robbins on the other hand is an extraordinary performer and doesn't disappoint. A friend of mine recently acquired the name Dufresne by marriage (OK the spelling may be different but it's still damn cool).
I always thought Brooks story was the most interesting, the tragedy of the institutionalised was very well done.
The end's just silly, but it does make you elated the first time you see it and that's good Hollywood.
It's certainly worth watching, but perhaps with all the hype surrounding it it's almost unfair on the film for a new audience member. It's not the second greatest film of all time whatever the IMDB might say.

It OK . It s definitly not one of the greatest films ever made. Its far too slushy for that.

Woolworths were bundling 10 films together for 2 quid and I got it as part of that.
Wouldn't have paid any more.

It's a hell of a lot better than the Godfather though...

Reading this thread is better than the film.
Or is it?
Just watch the bloody thing if it's that important!

Don't hate on it 'cos it's popular.
