Okay, I'm currently rewatching Season 1 (all that is currently availible on DVD, for shame), and I'm reminded of its greatness all over again.

BTW, I want to keep this spoiler-free for those who haven't seen it, including the biggest spoiler of all.

Aside from that - what or who were your favourite characters, quotes, scenes etc?

I love the obsession with food that is both quirky and mundane at the same time, especially when contrasted with the metaphysical elements of the show. The dialogue is superb too - each character having very distinctive ways of speaking, like no other show I've seen. Just compare Major Briggs' staid and awkward dialogues with his son to Josie Packard's pigeon-English sprinkled with muddled colloquialisms.

Oh, and Agent Cooper is one of the TV best creations of all time.

have you read the obsessive faqs at http://twinpeaks.org/ - there's also a shooting script for 'fire walk with me' that has all of the missing scenes included.

Well, good, I may just agree with you.

I love Albert too:
Look, it's trying to think.

RE: www.TwinPeaks.Org - Yeah, I like the fact that site is not at all flashy, but just packed with info.

They can't answer why Season 2 hasn't been released on DVD though!

I watched all but the last few episodes, intended to catch up when I bought all the videos, but then sold them when I heard a vicious rumour of a complete series DVD release. Damn them.

To be honest, I need my memory jogged...recall the obvious - cherry pies, log Lady, more babes per square mile than any other logging town etc. Oh, and that it was a great show (but then I was a bit of a Lynch obsessive at the time)

I remember having a soft spot for the deputy (Andy?)...did he have a weird condition or something...or he couldn't get it up!

Fantastic show, probably only surpassed at the time by Northern Exposure.

Hmm, I can't remember anything like you describe, apart from the fact that he was slightly 'simple'. He also cries at every murder scene, and fires his gun accidentally on a stake-out...
Zoe
I was nine when it first aired in this country, so my memory is a little fuzzy too!

I enjoyed its black comedy and Hitchcockian tone and its influence has certainly been far reaching, setting the standard for modern, intelligent TV drama.

Lynch is a bit like marmite though and I know a lot of people who found it prententious and deliberately obtuse.

I'd love to watch it again.

That may well be it...I remember him providing a few laughs. I recall for some reason a scene when the FBI/Police meet in the forest with a flip chart and piles of doughnuts!

Wasn't Lynch another comic releif in the show too...Cooper's deaf FBI boss?

Yeah, the scene in the woods was Cooper demonstrating his intuition/logic methods which came from a dream and his interest in Tibet.

Lynch appeared as Gordon Cole - hilarity ensued! He's another favourite character of mine...
Zoe
I've just added the pilot to my DVD rental queue. Quite looking forward to that little televisual treat.

I remember that scene very clearly - I thought it was the most exciting bit of television I'd ever seen when it was first broadcast. I haven't seen any of the TV epsiodes for many, many years, but I occasionally rewatch Fire Walk with Me, which I still find a very creepy film.

While everyone's right to emphasise the 'Lynchness' of Twin Peaks, I'd also point out it was co-written by Mark Frost of Hill Street Blues fame, who tempered some of the Lynch weirdness with his ear for dialogue and sharpness of characterisation.

Absolutely, and it's that fusion of realistic (and sometimes melodramatic) soap sensibilities with Lynch-type wierdness that makes it so fascinating and entertaining. You will literally be chuckling at some light-hearted character scene one minute, and being disturbed by dark violence the next.

Twin Peaks makes my mind think "David Duchovney in drag". He did, didn't he?

I watched it all the way through in the first year of uni. Well deserves another watch I think. Actually Colin and I were talking about Twin Peaks the other day when watching Lost - odd things in the forest TV.

Apparantly David Lynch was afraid of fans - of the ceiling type rather than the "fan-of-the-show" type - which is why the feature heavily - he thinks that they are frightening.

I am in a state of suspended animation thanks to the lack of a series 2 DVD.

Sign this, why not? It's got 24,000 signatures on it and seemingly hasn't made a blind bit of difference, but hey, why not?

I've loved rewatching the first series and Kyle MacLachlan's mannered performance is particularly wonderful.

There's three things that stop me liking it:

1. Fucking bloody David Twatface Lynch
2. The fact that everyone else thinks it's the best thing since sliced Beatles
3. The fact that my boyfriend adores it and keeps trying to force me to love it in the slightly obsessional way he does.

Oh, and

4. That fucking awful title sequence

Hmm, good points. I see my following points may be completely wasted, but I'll try anyway.

1. The Lynchian elements are not central to the story. Enjoy instead the dialogue, wonderful characters and atmosphere - created by an incredible team of writers.

2. That shouldn't put you off something. Watch it on its own merits and make your mind up that way.

3. Err, dump him?

4. That's part of the charm - it's a deliberate counterpoint to the more sordid, secretive goings-on of the town, and Badalamenti's dreamy theme does the same.
Stella MM
Who's she? The squeaky-voiced receptionist or the slaggy one who becomes a hooker at the brother?
Zoe
Look to the left - that's Audrey Horne and she's not slaggy she's misunderstood.

And like me, in love with her Special Agent.
Stella MM
*spack face* Of course!

several points...

'twin peaks' contibution to television cannot be disputed, it's re-introduction of art into mainstream television programming caused a fundamental change that we're still reaping the benfits of.

the release of the second season was never in question. the problems generally laid with the people who owned the distributon rights; the company who owned the american rights were a different company to those who owned the european rights - hence all the rumours that europe would get season two in autumn 2004, whilst america would have to wait until summer 2006 (please note, the accuracy of the dates may be slightly off). however, the rights issue has been sorted out after the mergers of various parent companies and the like. unfortunately the delay that we are suffering is a result of the need to remaster the the second season for release.

this may seem annoying and convoluted, but just have a read into the trials and tribulations regarding securing funding for the french remaster of 'fire walk with me' and the struggle to get the deleted scenes re-scored, re-edited and released. unfortunately, i don't think we'll ever see these now...

i'll happily admit that i've been in love with audrey horne for many years. she's special...

as for the pilot, as jessop has probably posted whilst i type this essay, it is indeed included on the r2 box-set, even though it has been trimmed down somewhat. this, however, is not a bad thing. as i'm sure you all know, warners weren't too keen on the idea of a television series so the pilot was marketed as a film. when lynch presented it to them in the format that it appears on the r2 box-set, it was dismissed and lynch was pressured into adding an ending, hence the sequence in the hospital basement, which shows a physical manifestation of bob, the killer, followed by cooper's '25 years later' dream sequence.

true, this was an almost nonsensical ending, but warners bought it, ran with it and the rest is history. i own the vhs of the pilot with this ending, but it only subtracts from the effect of the pilot.
Dorf
I've never seen or had the inclination to see twin peaks, this thread and Zoes comments in other threads have intreged me, I shall investigate further. smile.gif

I can recommend Twin Peaks to everyone. Damn TV-cult. Like X-Files out of hell. I watched Twin Peaks - The movie lately and it freakd me out. The first 20 minutes alone were kind of devastating. But i think it's only interessting for people who know the show. But Lynch is always fine crap.

Thank god...I thought I was loosing it!
I was looking for the release date here the other day myself and found the "1969" release date too.
really frustrating..cause no matter where I looked..I found speculation and nothing more. I despair!

Stella, you must see the whole series again...turn off the lights and just watch..and be amazed how this series creeps into your every nerve.
I had some friends see it since they had never watched it when it went on tv...one of them took the other guy´s hand and shouted "hold me". This was a guy who ..ok he´s a wuss when it comes to scary movies..but still, I´ve never quite seen that reaction before...and yes, he´s well over 20 years of age...and he has a girlfriend..heh. it was Bob of course who freaked him out...and frankly..I can understand that..cause he´s still the scariest scary person ever. I´m not sure how I will cope with watching the whole series again...and I concider myself rather tough when it comes to any kind of scary movies.

Got this on the recomendation of my mum a few months back. Quality stuff. Glad to hear that season 2 is coming out as I missed it when it was on tv (being about 5-6 years old at the time). Got a few questions.
1.How many seasons are there?
2.Should I wait till I've seen it all to watch Fire Walk With Me?
3.Anyone got a firm release date for season 2?

I bought this off Amazon last week when Raven pointed out how cheap it is. I'd forgotten quite how good it is and have been binging on it when I have the chance (such as a three-hour session on Thursday night). It's interesting how my reactions to it have changed - I'm much less interested in goody-two-shoes Donna and James, and much more intrigued by Audrey Horne. She's great - aloof, mischievous and vulnerable all at the same time. (Bring her back, Zoe!)

Anyway, to answer the questions. 1. Two, but the second is much longer than the first. 2. Probably, if you don't know whodunnit, though I'd say it stands on its own merits. 3. Alas no.
zeden
Cheers. I think I'll wait for season 2 before watching FWWM. Unfortunately I do know who dunnit, though the specifics of how and why I dont know. Really itching for series 2. Its a relief that there is only one other season, waiting for number 3 would have killed me.

Donna and James were better off together, however, than apart. Donna never could pull off the vixen act despite numerous attempts and only succeeded in making me despise her more, especially after The Harold Incident - cheers, LFB (and writers)! And that bit with James bedding the abused rich housewife was arguably the worst subplot of the already patchy second season. The way to keep things interesting might have been to have Maddy stick around longer and play out that love triangle for all it was worth, but now we're going back to the "they gave away the killer too soon" argument. All roads eventually lead back there. wink.gif
