Full Version: BLUES BROTHERS vs MIDNIGHT RUN
Spaced Out Forum > Media > Media

This week, two cross-country-duo-chaos-comedy-action flicks scrap it out.

THE BLUES BROTHERS
Aykroyd & Belushi. One has just left prison. They are on a mission from God. They are hounded by Nazi's, The Law and The Good 'Ol Boys. Hilarity ensues

MIDNIGHT RUN
Robert funking De Niro and Charles Grodin. One is avoiding prison. They are hounded by the mother farming Mob, the Feds and by bounty hunters. Hilarity and swearing ensues

Vote now or I'll get up and I'll bury this telephone in your head.
feck off!
The Blues Brothers should win this hands down surely. wink.gif

It takes an amazing film to turn an old , battered Dodge into a cult car.

The Blues Brothers makes my life better. I saw them live, with Jim replacing John of course. Possibly the greatest thing in the entire world.

Both excellent films to be sure. It's hard to say, but I would have to go with The Blues Brothers because of the musical numbers, with Aretha's being the best.

Also for various cameos including Cab & Steven Speilberg.
Igmeister
Blues Brothers. No contest.
widowspider
Blues Brothers, hands down.

Having never seen 'Midnight Run' I must regretfully abstain.

Both of you must watch Midnight Run - it's a minor classic.

The Blues Brothers, on the other hand, is a pile of festering, wankstained jockstraps.
Starscream`s Ghost
As much as I like the Blues, Midnight Run wins this one. The funniest thing De Niro`s ever done.

ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif Seriously, buy it now..you won't be dissapointed. In fact if you think its crap I'll refund the cost, I'm that confident you'll like it(£6 quid at amazon).

Blues Brothers
A wonderful mess. Great music, good cameos, big car crashes and dumb Nazis. Haven't seen it for a few years, but when I was a kid it was one of my favourite films. But...

Midnight Run is better, IMHO because it has the following

- A cast performing at their best. One of DeNiro's best performances. You'll be scratching your head after wondering why Charles Grodin was never a huge star.
Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina and Joe Pantoliano give excellent support (especially Joey Pants and Farina)

- It has a great, uncharacteristic Danny Elfman score

- It is funny and exciting all the way through AND still has time to have a blub moment at the end

- The script is fantastic and has probably the best use of swearing in a movie...ever

Thank God they went for the DeNiro/Grodin pairing. Apparentley Stallone/Cher were an early consideration!!

My god, you're so lucky!

I voted Blues Brothers, it's one of my favourite films.

Midnight Run, easily. I like Blues Brothers but Midnight Run is smarter, funnier and more rewatchable.

....and then you'll watch Beethoven, Heart & Souls, Beethoven's 2nd, Clifford, and you'll have your answer.

I'm abstaining for now, although since I saw this topic, one quote has been going round and round in my head;

"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
"Hit it!"

Well of al those classics I've only seen Beethoven...but still, Grodin is good in that despite the quality of the film

Fair dues, Grodin is great. I was just highlighting that his choice of project didn't really help his star to rise.

He is great though. I remember him fondly from So I Married An Axe Murderer, where he owned every second he was on screen. Great!
