New Hope - Empire
Batman- Batman Returns
X-Men - X-Men 2
Mad Max- Mad Max2
Anyone got any others?

Mad Max 2 was more popular and more copied, but I still prefer the original.

From Russia With Love is generally regarded as the best Bond film (although not by me). That was a number two wasn't it?
Superman Two is better than Superman One. Some claim that Toy Story 2 is better than the other one also.
Oh, and Blade 2.
And Return to the 36th Chamber. Better than the first one.

It is number two, but I don't like it, and I think Goldfinger - number 3 - is more highly regarded.

Ah come on thats a bit harsh! I mean I don't think its quite as masterful as the first but by the standards of any other scifi horror movie its a work of unparalleled skill. Infact I might actually find it more watchable if not better per se.

Jason X (took 9 films and a dash of stupidity to make a great Jason film)
Two Towers
Batman returns
Harry Potter gets better with each film
Mad Max 2
Blade 2
Empire Strikes Back
Bronx Warriors 2 (not difficult - both still rather crap)
Desperado
Armour of God II: Operation Condor (for the wind tunnel scene)
Dawn Of The Dead
Transporter 2 (not seen it yet, but I just know its gonna be good)
As good as they are, can't rate T2 or Aliens over the originals

That's a difficult one. They're both excellent. A lot of people prefer the second one but the first one has Marlon Brando in it and it has the pivotal part of the story where Michael turns into his father.

I've heard a lot of people say they prefer GF II to GFI, but I can never get into that..There'sso much iconic stuff in GF I, Brando's performance, the business in the restraunt, the stuff with the grandchild, the renouncing Satan...GF II just didn't stay with me in the same way.

Technically the Bond films shouldn't count, as they're not really sequels. Are they?
Spidey-2 is better than Spidey-1, no doubt.
Aliens - although the original is a brilliantly made piece of thrilling horror, the sequel is much more enjoyable for me.

Agree w/ all these, add-in Supes 2 for sure....Spidey 2 and X2, though there are aspects of the firsts that are sorely lacking in each, but they do come out on top. I have to go w/ Return of the King for the LOTR bunch, tho. (Still hard to rate them as sequels, though, it's one film isn't it?)

Yeeeeeeah, but Ridley Scott isn't the mark of quality he used to be. In fact, the last decent thing he did was Thelma & Louise. Remember, GI Jane, White Squall, Hannibal and Gladiator are all Ridley's films. And they all blow. Big time.

Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven were both stunning films... Everyone is allowed to have their bad moments... The same bloke who directed Schindlers List and Jaws also made War of the Worlds and The Lost World...
But then again, I love historical movies (even some of the more inaccurate ones), so I loved Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven...

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I could use several words to describe my feelings about Gladiator, and 'stunning' isn't one of them. Won't comment on the Kingdom Of Heaven because I haven't seen it - agree with you on Lost World and War of The Worlds.

The Alien/Aliens debate is one I'd rather not touch, since, as far as I'm concerned, they're both superior films. But if I were pressed, I think I'd give the nod to Ridley Scott's Alien, mostly for making science-fiction safe again for more serious considerations, and for giving the female protagonist something to do besides stand around and look frightened.
Otherwise, in yet another close race, I'd take The Godfather Part 2 over The Godfather, mostly on the strength of Pacino's performance, but also for Robert De Niro's strong turn as a young, up-and-coming Vito Corleone. And Fredo's tale wraps up rather nicely. Granted, none of it has quite the same visceral edge as Michael's consolidation of power at the conclusion of the first film, but I'll stick with my choice.
Also, I'll take The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly over either of its predecessors any day of the week; Empire over A New Hope; Wrath of Khan over Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Undiscovered Country over The Final Frontier; Army of Darkness over The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 (it's my opinion, damn it!); Dawn over Night (by a hair); Last Crusade over Temple of Doom; and Revenge of the Sith over The Phantom Menace.
