Granada is making a new version of The Prisoner for Sky One, reports MediaGuardian. It will not be set in Portmeirion.

The executive producer, Damien Timmer, said it remained hugely relevant. "Although it will be a radical reinvention, it will still be a heightened show with themes such as paranoia, conspiracy and identity crisis," he told the trade magazine Broadcast...

The recent success of intelligent, pacy thrillers, including 24 and Spooks, in addition to the popular revival of Doctor Who, helped to persuade Granada that the series was ripe for reinterpretation.

As usual with these things, I can't help feeling it would be a much better idea to come up with an original idea for a show about 'paranoia, conspiract and identity crisis' than try to match a classic.

I would personally prefer they did neither, I get really fed up of every channel making a clone when somethings successful (E.g 24, LOTR2). I never really watched The Prisoner but I'm sure some fans of the original are going to be pretty annoyed if they butcher it.

Anyway, it may come and bite me on the ass and be a really good show, but I'm pretty confident it wont. smile.gif

Even more so than with The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe they better treat the concept with the respect it deserves. This is my favourite show of all time.

I don't really care about The Prisoner, having never watched it, but these remake things are just depressing.

I agree with you Chappers - If they are going to update and change a show so it becomes quite removed from the source material, why not invent a new show with similar themes and start from there. It's almost like they need an existing 'hook' to get these shows made, because no-one is bold enough to commission or write new material.

You should, it's flippin' excellent - bold, experimental and quite mad.

Just like your good self.

I don't have anything against watching it - I've just never had the opportunity. But I probably would prefer Iron Maiden's 'Prisoner' from The Number of the Beast.
