Full Version: Can Dogs Look Up?

All right, all right, all right. I know what you're thinking. The answer's OBVIOUSLY no. Unfortunately, not everyone I ask says that! Adults and middle-schoolers alike, we're equally devided on this issue. Almost literally 50/50, actually! So, what's you're view? Can a dog lift its head up to a 90 degree (or close enough) angle that it can see up while it's standing? None of that sitting and howling at the moon gargabe, because their spine is aligned with their head, and technically they're just looking forward. Another rule is, no looking with their eyes! It's head while standing or nothing!

Got some proof they can look up? I'd love to see it! Until then, I'm STILL believing they can't.

Also note: We're not talking about wolves, we're talking about dags. Normal, ordinary, bow-bow dags.

Go!

Owzat?

I'm still on the fence with this issue.
_Pufferfish_
I'd have to say that was between a 50- to 70-degree angle... and that dog has a huge neck (seriously very long, it's funny) so it's cheating. ;D

I don't know if that picture, while hilariously cute, is enough to convince me otherwise...
GundamGuy_UK
Well the camera isn't direct from the side, so it might be a larger angle.
_Pufferfish_
Curse you, GundamGuy, and your little dog, too! Rehehehehehe!

Anyways, let's hear some response from some more people with more evidence to prove or disprove my stolen theory!

Well, our dog can rest it's head flat on the floor and she rolls her eyes upwards to watch someone walk by without lifting or turning her head from the floor. She particularly scans your movements with just her eyes if you have a yogurt pot she could potentially lick clean. Or a bit of cheese. Or a choc-ice wrapper. Or a wooden clothes peg. Or a pidgeon on the fence. Just about anything really.

So dogs can look up. Just ain't got any photos. She's too quick.

I'm pretty sure dogs can look up, the obviously cant move their head at a 90 degree angle, but can u? Can't everyone look up without without having their head like that so why cant a dog.

P.S. I have no idea thats just my theory, but it is hard to go against what Big Al says
shinyelvenqueen
If anyone has seen the new Narnia film then there is a great example of dogs/wolves not being able to look up.
Crutch
When I am coming home for christmas I will take the family dog and pull his head up till it won't move anymore... Wonder what PETA says to that... Maybe I should pull the head of my dog... don't know. But it's maybe a little snap in the neck, but a giant leap for mankind... No, I don't hurt anymals... ahhh animals...

AND YOU WON'T NEITHER!

This thread's already in members, isn't it?

EDIT: Here it is.

Hey newbie here!

I took a pic of my dog looking up at me. Hes in a sit position and looking straight up. He aslo does it when hes standing on all fours. So I guess its true that Dogs can look up. :\

Splamge
To be fair what do dogs have to look up for anyway apart from owners with cameras, giant eagles, flying bones, comets, seagulls, cats in zeppelins, Great Danes, kites, weather balloons, satellites and planets about to crash into the Earth?
Crutch
Food.
Splamge
Maybe when Nick Frost began all this when filming Spaced he was thinking of pigs which cannot actually look up

At least that's what Big Al says

By looking down and seeing that their feet are in the air.

I'm going to say something controversial now, but bear with me.

Dogs can look up.
In the human skeletal structure the head is on top of our spine, and to look up a human will align its head to make the jaw parallel to the spine.
In the canine skeletal structure, the head is at the end of the spine, and the jaw is already aligned with the spine.

Ergo, they are already looking up.

And don't get me started on the eyeballs...

Trying to decipher this gives me a headache. Especially when there isn't a full stop.

So, why not open the thread: "Can dogs look back." It even has this sad undertone in it!
Matt Curran
Alright i KNOW that MOST dogs CANT look up but however there are some exceptions, because well basically there has to be like in humans i bet there are people that cant look up...

however does anyone know where the joke of dogs nt being able to look up came from!? because i do... and no its not from Big Al!!!

now if you can remember the spaced episode where daisy sees colin out of her window going to the neighbours, well the cast were all trying to get ada (colin) to stop and look up at daisy in the window and they couldnt do it, so Nick Frost ((mike, ed)) says "its cos dogs cant look up in it" and this sparked the same debate we are having now...
Verstan
my dog ( god rest his soul) could look up, i remeber walking along my upstairs landing singing and he was doenstairs and just looked up at me as if to say ( ala the boys from spaced) "whatayadoin"

so they can

If dogs are looking normally when they've got their head straight ahead, and to be normal (like all other mammals on all fours) we humans must tilt our heads back, then no one, dogs, pig and man alike, ever truly look up.

Tears...rolling...down face.

^When I read myself qouted, I though "That's good, why didn't me post it?" Then I read, that I actually did! I got way too little sleep this week.

Pigs can't look up, something to do with the neck not being able to bend upwards. They can get badly sunburnt too... mebbe they're connected in some way?
